HISTORICAL SOCIETY Of MONTANA COMP HELENA MT 44 58 Per Cent Unemployment Rate Pushes Up WASHINGTON (AP) Wide spread layoffs pushed the na unemployment rate up to 58 per cent of the work force last month the highest level in 212 years the government re ported today Another 440000 workers joined unemployment rolls in September bringing the total to a seasonally adjusted 53 mil lion the Iabor Department said The increase in the jobless rate from 54 per cent in Au gust was tlxp largest monthly increase since last January when it also rose four tenths of one per cent Unemployment has been creeping up gradually for the past several months and is ex pected to rise above six per cent late this year or in early 1975 Last October the jobless rate had dropped to a 3 12 year low of 46 per cent Since then the number of unemployed per sons has risen by 12 million President ord who will send his economic program to Con gress next week has indicated he will propose an expanded public service jobs program us ing federal funds to enable state and local governments to hire the unemployed Most of the unemployment last month took place among women aged 25 and older and among teen agers particularly males 18 to 19 years old De ci i i college attendance among young men coupled with the slower growth in jobs contributed to the higher job lessness among youth the gov ernment said Total employment was re ported up by 350000 from Au gust to September Over the past year total employment has climbed by 14 million half the year to year gain recorded Both white and blue collar workers felt the effects of the slowing economy Both cate gories registered increases in joblessness Heavy layoffs were reported in manufacturing con struction and wholesale and re tail trade unem ployment rate at 124 percent rose to its highest level in four years Within goods producing in dustries employment gained slightly in September due to a reduction in strike activity In September the average work week of factory workers remained at 401 hours while factory overtime fell by two tenths of an hour The average hourly pay for a manufacturing worker last month rose eight cents to $451 while weekly earnings averaged $18175 up from $17764 the de partment said Among the major labor force groups the jobless rate for full time workers was reported up from 48 per cent in August to 53 per cent in September while the rate for household heads moved up from 31 to 34 In a racial breakdown job lessness for white workers rose from 48 to 53 percent reflect ing the increases among adult women and teen agers Unem ployment among blacks in creased to 98 per cent com pared with 92 per cent in Au gust The civilian labor force usu ally declines in September but this year the government said the publicity workshop Thursday night for representatives of the various clubs and organizations in the area Newspaper policy and ways to improve club reporting and advance publicity releases were
