This time, the catalyst for a sharp skid was Bear Stearns Cos.

The drop in Stemco revenues was attributed to declines in sales of both original equipment and after-market equipment for the domestic heavy duty trucking industry. The trucking market was stronger a year ago, officials said. Stemco 's profits also dropped "as market conditions led to lower volumes," the company said. Overall, EnPro's sealing products division, of which Stemco is a part, posted an increase in sales to $118.3 million, up from $108.3 million in the second quarter of 2006.

Despite the day's loss, the index was off only 0.63 percent for the week.
