Kathy Olwell, a 24-year Burlington resident and a retired social worker, beat Tom Derenthal for the empty Central District seat. In 2013, Derenthal ran as a emocrat in an unsuccessful bid for the Ward 1Burlington City Council seat, a seat which went to the longtime indepen- ent Sharon Foley Bushor, who has occu- ied that seat for 28 years. Olwell was a Burlington school commissioner in the mid 90s, but left because he moved out of the district. Now, she wants to use her seat and her experience to help the district move through tensions caused by budget cuts.

Olwell said she want to impose any sort of vision the board, but rather wants to make sure that the community is heard, especially families who speak English as a first language.
