3C Ohio State Rolls, 49-9 Griffin Establishes Big Ten Rush Mark Fort Myers News-Press, Sunday October 20, 1974 season, prolonging their unbeaten streak to 17 games. Indiana fell to 1-5. Greene piled up 330 total yards, running for one touchdown and passing for two others as the Buckeyes pushed their Big Ten record to 3-0. Indiana, now 1-3 in the conference, never challenged the Buckeyes after Ohio State scored the first three times it had the ball for a 21-0 lead in the first 122 minutes. Griffin darted 20 and 12 yards for the first two Ohio State touchdowns.

Greene squirmed 19 yards for one touchdown and passed 53 yards to Dave Hazel and eight yards to Brian Baschnagel. Ohio State's alternating fullbacks, Pete Johnson and Harold Henson, hammered one yard apiece for the other touchdowns. Indiana's lone points came in the second quarter on a 46-yard field goal by Frank Stavroff and a one-yard touchdown run by Nick Barnes in the closing seconds in the final period. 1 tefl fel'. lJ COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) Woody Hayes jokingly said he faced a team revolt Saturday if he didn't let Archie Griffin become Big Ten football's all-time career rushing leader.

"If I had taken him out when he was close to that record, I would have had a mutiny," the Ohio State coach said. Griffin, a junior tailback from Columbus, rolled up 146 yards and two touchdowns, helping the top-ranked Buckeyes crush Indiana 49-9. That gave him 3,321 yards rushing for all games, battering the conference record of 3,315 yards set by Purdue's Otis Armstrong in 1972. With 16 straight regular season games of more than 100 rushing yards, Griffin is one game short of the national record. Steve Owens of Oklahoma had 17 games in a row in 1968-69.

The 180-pound Griffin broke the mark with more than 11 minutes to play. He was carried off the field by his joyous teammates, still clutching the football. A sellout Ohio Stadium crowd of 87,671, second largest in the school's history, gave Griffin a standing ovation while the Buckeyes mobbed him on the sidelines. Ilumm's three-yard shot to Westbrook late in the third quartet was his 36th touchdown pass, breaking the 1971-73 record by Dave Jaynes of Kansas. Humm also completed 15 consecutive throws, shattering the old mark of 14 by Jaynes. To break the monotony of the Humm to Westbrook show, John O'Leary scored twice on runs of one and five yards, Jeff Moran added two more on one and 10-yard jaunts and Tony Davis ripped into the Jayhawk line on a one-yard touchdown stab. Mike Coyle converted after all eight touchdowns. Humm's best performance previously was against Army in 1972, when he connected on 14 of 18 passes.

Calvin Gulliver also scored twice for Alabama, rambling 30 yards on the first play after Shelby's punt return and adding another on a six yard run in the final period. It was the 17th straight regular season victory for Alabama, including six this year. The Tide has a 3-0 record in their drive for fourth straight SEC championship. Meanwhile, Tennessee, a perennial power, dropped its third straight conference game for the first time since 1964 and was buried in the SEC cellar with 0-3 record.

The Vols fell to 2-3-1 overall. Tennessee's only touchdown came on the brilliant individual effort of Stanley Morgan, who broke away on a 64-yard run that narrowed Alabama's lead to 7-6 shortlv before halftime.
