Easy, says Amy Irving, who will appear with her mother Priscilla Pointer in the Santa Fe Festival Theatres production of The Glass Menagerie which opens Thursday at the Armory for the Arts. People here dont seem to be easily impressed. A lot of times Im not even sure they know who I am until they say goodbye and call me by name. Story by Mary Hays The New MexicanBayard Horton THEATRICAL FIRST Amy Irving, left, and the first real-life daughter-mother team to appear In Priscilla Pointer are making history by becoming Tennessee WWlazns Glass Menagerie. Santa Fe has been home for Irving for four years her only home, she said, although she quickly admits that she Is not here much of the time.

Her busy career has included an Academy Award nomination for her performance In Yentl and numerous stage and screen roles for which she has won high praise. Pointers wide stage experience includes a number of Tennessee Williams roles, which she describes as extraordinary opportunities for actors, partly because so much is given by the playwright. Its a Joy not to have to apologize for your script, added Irving. You dont have to Justify anything. The playwright Just guides you along.

Both Irving and Pointer appeared as part of the Festival Theatres season last year and although they were In different productions, they are used to working as a team. They have done four movies together, including and a new film with Dudley Moore, Mickey and Maude. Plus, as they explained in an interview last week during a rehearsal lunch break (and two very experienced interviewees were they: no greasy fingers, luncheon accidents or talking with mouths full although at one point Irving did ask her mother to check and see if she had chicken in her teeth, proving once again that you dont stop being your mothers child Just because youre famous) they were a theater family. Pointer and her late husband Jules Irving founded the San Francisco Actors Workshop and were later associated with the Lincoln Center Repertory Company, Involving tbelr daughter in the theater at an early age. As Amanda and Laura in The Glass Menagerie, they will be making theater history: it will be the first time that the mother and daughter roles WU1 be played by real-life mother and daughter.

What is It like to play against each other? Irving said its both a plus and a minus. We keep each other honest. When I look in my mothers eyes, I can tell when shes pretending and when shes being real and she can tell See FAMILY AFFAIR, Page 7 Actor wants success on his ovn terms i v- i of really doteg the play right. 1 Acting came naturally for Daly. His mother Hope and father James were active for years to -New York drama circles.

His older sister Tyne followed them Into the business, and has since won fame starring on the television series Cag-; ney and Lacey. Daly admitted he would Jump for the chance to play a choice film role, but said hes happy on the stape. And he prefers the theater over tele- vision, saying his guest appearances on such shows as Hill Street Dlues went by too fast h-and didnt allow him time to really work any- thlngout. When Glass Menagerie completes Its run, Daly will be heading to New York where hes cast to another play. He doesnt know what hell do after that, but Isnt one to fret.

A career to the arts Is net a stable prcposl- -tion. You cant phm It out, and If you do, it will never work out Its not Lke ir 3 the ladder of a corporation. 1 TS lmothy Daly thin it would be great I to be a huge movie star. 1 But the affable young actorl who appeared in the film Diner, has some clear tde-as about bow to attain stardom and selllhg out is not cme of them. Im not losing any sleep about hat Im doing, says Daly, who has concentrated on stage and television work since Diner was re- leased two years ago.

There are lots of ways of getting known that arent necessarily beneficial to a quality career. Pd be losing more sleep if I was doing teen-age sex comedies. You have to live with yourself. Daly currently is in Santa Fe, rehearsing for his role as the Gentleman Caller to the Festival Theatre production of Tennessee Williams The Glass Menagerie. Its a play hes always admired, but never had a chance to do before.

Im very excited about it because I love the part and I love the play. I think we have a shot Friday, August 3, 1964.
