The proposed purchase stirred debate Jan. 15, and the board voted against the expenditure. The public works department then was told to resubmit bids on a formal bid sheet.

Some board members said the bids collected on several different dump trucks were difficult to compare, and the township might be paying too much. The truck was quoted at $119,875. The board will meet at 7:30 p.m. in the township hall, 3720 Kee-wahdin Road. COTTRELLVILLE TWP.

Senior center offering photo shoot March 7 The St. Clair County Council on Aging's Cherry Beach Senior Center is offering glamour photography to women of all ages from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. March 7 at the center, 7232 S. River Road.

A guard at a maximum-security prison in the Upper Peninsula was jailed without bond Monday in the shooting deaths of two co-workers. Steven Edward Tierney, 41, of Munising was arraigned Sunday on two counts of open murder in the deaths of Sally Kay Paajanen, 34, and Craig Allen Fleck, 31. Paajanen's grandmother, Janette Paajanen lives in St. Clair. She called the slayings "so wasteful." She learned of her granddaughter's death by phone from a relative and was shocked at the news.

"As my son said, people don't do this in the Upper Peninsula," she said. A neighbor found the victims' bodies about 2 p.m. Saturday outside Paajanen's home in Marquette County's Skandia Township, Undersheriff Jack Schneider said. City Council to vote on trash-pickup contract The City Council is expected to discuss and vote tonight on extending World Waste Services' contract for another three years. The company handles trash pickup in the city and is proposing merging the two-day collection schedule into one day.

Township approves pay increase for officials The township board increased pay for some officials last week because their job responsibilities increased. Jobs now are compatible with those in surrounding areas, Supervisor Carl Ver-meesch said. The treasurer will receive $11,500 a year, up from $8,700. The clerk will get $9,500, up from $8,700, and the supervisor gets $10,000, up from $8,700. Trustee pay of $80 a meeting stays the same.
