MONDAY, FEBRUARY 10, 2003 -Local Sports. TIMES HERALD, PORT HURON, MICHIGAN 5C PHN: Place in meet fflnu anczn cnoiTCTi mama JM i V-rjk A 'A Continued from PageIC final meet March 2 at Wyandotte. The top three teams in District 5 qualify for the state finals. Kalamazoo Hackett turned in a strong performance with its high and low squads in the nine-team event. Hackett ecjged out Ann Arbor Pioneer for first place in the high division, while Port Huron Northern took third.

In the low division, Hackett beat out two Ann Arbor schools Pioneer and Huron for first place. The Huskies, who have 10 skaters on their roster, were fourth. Junior Erika Politowicz competed in one event Sunday in the Scheonrock. She was forced to sit out the high school meet because of foot problems. "With as many injuries we had, the girls were excited about how well we did," Politowicz said.

"I plan to be back for the next meet, and hopefully for the state finals. "This might have secured a spot for us at states. But we'll still need to do well in our final meet." Politowicz, a member of Northern's high team, spent Friday and Saturday at McMorran assisting her mother, Sandy, with the Scheonrock. The high team earned third-place finishes in the Jumps and Moves events. The low squad captured a second in Spins.

Besides losing Politowicz with the foot injury, Northern's Sarah Seely suffered a back injury, while Sarah Plant, a sophomore at Port Huron High, was slowed by a bruised tailbone. Magneson plans to work with the Scheonrock committee about moving the high school event up earlier in the weekend. "We're sharing the judges for the weekend, so hopefully we could do the high school meet Friday or Saturday," Magneson said. "I think it definitely would be easier on the skaters, coaches and parents. "With skaters hurt, we tried to try some different things.

Northern finished third in the high division of the nine-team event.

The low squad was fourth. worked out well." Sandy Politowicz was impressed with the performance by the Kalamazoo Hackett teams. "The Kalamazoo high team did not place in the top four in the first meet," Politowicz said. "They came out of nowhere today. "We scored better than I thought we would in some events.

Other times you think you skated well and didn't end up with the scores. "It would have been interesting if the team would have been 100." "You hear people talking between periods and they're really disgusted," Smith said. "(They say), 'This is sick, I've never seen anything like It's all negative." The majority of fans don't seem to blame Jones, but they do embrace the coaching change because they believe something had to be done. None of the fans expect to see a drastic improvement immediately. They know at this stage of the season there are few quality players available who could help the Beacons. Still, they want to see more entertaining hockey than they've seen this season.

"It looks to me like they're not out there trying that hard," Port Huron's John Johnson said. "They don't look like they're playing together as a team and standing up for each other. The goalie gets run and no one does anything." Becker said it's embarrassing during games to see so much "running, ducking and hiding" from the Beacons.

"I can (honestly) say there's as much talent there as any team in Port Huron, but they don't utilize it all," Becker added. "There's too much finesse and not enough of just playing hockey. You know what I mean? "Hockey's a Canadian game it's a tough sport but here there are too many extra passes, and when one guy lets down, everyone lets down."
