Fort Myers (Fla.) News-Press, Fri., Feb. 2, 1973 3-C Bugner's British Bunch' Travels To See Air Bout - NEW YORK AP) - "Bugner's BritiBh Bunch" is coming. England's handsome Joe Bugner is fighting Muhammad Ali : in Las Vegas on Valentine's Day and seven jetloads 1,350 persons-will travel from London to cheer for their boy. Bugner has a 44-4-1 record with 27 knockouts. He is an old Ali sparring partner, having worked 40 training rounds with the former champion since 1970. "Ali has nothing that scares me," said the 219-pound Bugner, holding a Thursday news conference after his entourage, including three British boxers for the Las Vegas undercard, arrived in New York. "Muhammad has slowed down on his footwork, so he's trying to prove to himself that he's now a puncher. I am very, very confident of beating Ali." Bugner, the European heavyweight titleholder, has a sharp jab, but isn't generally considered in the 31-year-old Ali's class. He has been to the United States four pre-vious times, "going to school" as Ali's sparmate on each occasion. Still, the British love him. Williams, . who has played in 15 of the Governors' 16 games, has connected on 212 field goals and 74 free throws for 498 points and a per-game average of 33.2 points, according to National Colle-g i a t e Athletic Association statistics released Thursday, Raymond Lewis of Los Angeles State Isn't far behind with a 32.3 average on 205 field goals and 74 free throws for 484 points, also in 15 games. William Averitt of - Pepperdine is third, averaging 31.1 points in 15 games with 193 field goals and 81 free throws. Williams isn't among the top 10 in either field goal or free throw percentage but is a major ' factor in Austin Peay's fourth-place in team offense. The Tennessee school, with a 13-3 record, has averaged 96.3 points per game, trailing North Carolina State's 100.9", Southwest Tht scoring leaders: Williams, Austin Peay Lewis, Los Angeles St Averitt, Pepperdine Lamar, SW Louisiana Stewart, Richmond -Biles, Tulsa Terry, Arkansas Rich, Oklahoma City Edwards, OklahomCty Charles, Fordham ...9 212 74 205 74 193 1 U5 74 116 32 m 86 157 134 200 70 201 58 170 S4 PH. (AP) Dr. Doug Clement, chairman of the Achilles Society, said Wednesday there will be no Achilles indoor track and field meet here this year. It had been set for Feb. 16. Clement said difficulties in finding a building for the meet at a convenient date delayed the proceedings to the point where the society felt it was too late in the season to hold the meet. "We definitely plan on continuing the series in 1974," Clement said. Louisiana's 99.8 and Oral Roberts' 96.9. All Individual and team leaders remained unchanged except in average rebounds where Marvin Barnes of Providence edged ahead of defending champion Kermit Washington of American University, 19.6 to 19.4. Mike Stewart of Santa Clara had the best field goal percentage with .665 on 113 of 170 attempts. Indiana's John Ritter continued as the free throw leader, missing only five of 70 attempts for .929. The El Paso squad of the University of Texas led in team defense, holding opponents to a per-game average of 53.8 points in a 12-6 season while offense leader North Carolina State had the widest scoring margin of 27.1 points per game. North Carolina leads in field goal percentage with .547, Duke in free throw percentage with .800 and Manhattan has the biggest rebound margin with 20.8. died in the first two days of sales at 15 Great Britain cinemas. Ali will receive a flat $250,000 for the scheduled 12-rounder at the Las Vegas Convention Center. Bugner's managers won't reveal his cut, which comes mainly on percentages, but one inside source said it would approach $200,000. Ali also receives $10,000 for training expenses. Britishers are paying $500 for a five-day excursion that includes the roundtrip flight to Las Vegas, four nights in a swank hotel and a $100 ringside seat. "Bugner will have more rooters at ringside than Ali," said London promoter Mickey Duff. "And, the closed circuit will do wonderfully, considering the fact that British people will be watching It at 3:30 a.m." The fight, Duff said, will gross more for closed-circuit TV in Great Britain than any except the Ali-Frazier title bout of two years ago. That one did $750,000. "Ali likes to refer to opponents who have sparred with him as his former hired help," said Duff. "Well, we once paid All $1,000 just to work out with Bugner. That makes him our former hired help." Bugner's people spent $20,000 for those four trips to the United States to spar with Ali. The first time was 1970 at Gil Clancy's gym in New York when Ali received the $1,000 payday. "He ain't no bum," Scotsman Andy Smith, manager of Bugner, said of his Hungarian-born fighter. "He's at his very best against large opponents like Ali. It's the short, stubby guys who give him the worst times." Smith added, "the 14th of February will be Joe Bugner's great day."
