"We plan on being very community-minded and we plan on being very competitive," he said. "No doubt about it, we're here to compete." Karpowicz says the most encouraging figure from the latest sweep is the station's rating for the entire day, from sign-on to sign-off.

WEVU increased both its rating and its share for that period. "We feel good about that," Karpowicz said. "We think that's not a bad showing for a May book." Part of the daily showing, of course, could be a reflection on ABC, WEVU's parent network. ABC continues to make strides nationally and that is bound to help its affiliates, a fact Karpowicz acknowledges. "ABC is an excellent network," he says.

Still, he likes to think that is not the only reason people are turning to Channel 26. "Our only hope is that people who haven't seen us will try us, see we have a better product and make the switch," Karpowicz said. "It's happening bit by bit" WINK's news director, Jim Bennett, believes the best explanation for that station's success is simply that "we are recognized as the news leader," due in part to the station's greater number of newscasts. WINK currently is the only local station with a noon newscast and the only one with an hour newscast in the evening. It may lose that distinction soon, however.

"We will be adding at least one more half-hour in September," said WBBH's Bradley. "And there's a very good possibility we'll have an additional half-hour at about the same time." The area's third station lags far behind WINK and WBBH, but the station's general manager believes it is closing the gap slowly but surely. "We recognize those guys are the leaders but we want to do something about it," said Karpowicz. "It's a slow process I would rather not go through but we recognize it takes time and we have to earn our way." WEVU currently is running an ad campaign centered on the premise that "We work harder" and Karpowicz said, "I think we do." Karpowicz said WEVU's broadcast of the Lee County Regatta, of a STATE RT. 78, PINE ISLAND RD.
