A PERMANENT CAMP IOWA NATIONAL GUARD MAY ESTABLISH GROUNDS IN DES MOINES. There is a Movement on Foot to Thai Effect Captain Caughlan Favors Such an Undertaking--Would Modern and Hygienic.

Be The Iowa National Guard may establish a permanent famp in the vi- cir.ity of Des Moines, near the location of the army post. For some time such an undortaking as this has beea talked ot but nothing has been accomplished to further the idea. A movement is on foot at present to have the state purchase 1(50 acres of land adjoining the army post to be used as a permanent camp for the Iowa National Guard, a rendezvous similar to Camp Lincoln at Springfield, 111., where all the regiments of the militia of that state go into camp once a year. Much agitation has been raised since the suggestion that a like camp be established in Iowa and several officers, both line and staff, have expressed themselves as being heartily in favor of a permanent camp at Des Moines. Captain Caughlan Talks. Captain C.

Caughlan of Company I. K. when speaking about the proposed permanent camp said: "I am heartily in of a peimaneut camp CROP OUTLOOK CALLED GOOD. President Ramsey of Wabash Roa Says Corn Promises Well. New York.

Aug. seph Ramsey, of the Wabash, who ha just returned from a trip west, said to day of the crop situation: "All of th crops are doing exceedingly well. Th corn that I saw looked especially fine but probably one reason for that i that the cooler the weather the bette corn looks until up to the very peno of maturing. It all depends upon th coming of frost If it comes earl this year the corn is likely to be ser ously damaged. If not, a fair cro be harvested "It is my experience that a moder ate crop at good prices is better fo the farmers than a bumper crop a low prices, and it is as well for th railroads, too.

In years of bumpe crops the roads often haul a larg quantity of corn at low rates. Again a diminished crop is always wonder fully effective in bringing out grai: which the farmers are holding. large quantity of last year's corn i still in the cribs out west, all of whicL will come to market if there is any serious injury to the crop. "Thus there is sure to be a larg amount of corn moved this year. farmers have become so well 'fixed' in recent years that they can afford carry over a large part of their grain if they see any prospect of prices, and are very ready to act." Des Moines is the best possible place for a perman ent camp owing to its central location I think I oice the sentiments ot several officers of the Iowa regiments when I say that I am very much in favor of a permanent camp.

T.he members of my company, too. I am satisfied, would be better pleased were they to have a permanent camp." A Hygienic Modern Camp. The plan contemplates a thoroughly hygienic modern camp with good water, perfect diamage and a well equinpcd hospital.
