Glenn Caron often 'Moonlighting' perfecting scripts for the ABC hit NOTES 1 1 through his typewriter. "I'll screw it up myself," he laughs. His colleagues report that he labors over every word. Sometimes his public isn't happy. He mentions the episode in which David and Maddie finally make love; viewers wrote letters protesting the "violent" foreplay.

Caron was genuinely baffled. For him, "what was going on up there was passion." It is this kind of risk-taking that has cut Caron from the pack. He has adapted Shakespeare to prime time. He has taken '40s film noir and made it sing in black and white, no less. And he has inserted Stanley Donen-style interpretative dance into a sequence scored by Billy Joel.

All that is due to Caron's clout. But Caron (pronounced like Karen, not as in Leslie) is an unlikely savior for third-ranked ABC. He doesn't look or act like a television executive. He's a big Teddy-bear who is indisputably in charge. He listens to actors, writers and editors.

But as his 100-person Moonlighting crew knows, his opinion is the one that counts. And he doesn't care what it costs. He spent $3 million on the Taming of the Shrew episode. "ABC and I go 50-50. Their 50 (percent) is the bank.

I don't have $1.5 million." If money means nothing, ratings mean less. "ABC never believed we'd do better than just the Top 30. I always agreed with them." The show is now consistently in the Top 10. and has pulled Who's the Boss? and Groinng Pains along with it. When told that Shepherd was pregnant, he neither ranted nor threatened to sue.

He congratulated. And he meant it. He is optimistic. It'll work out. Sorry, but he wouldn't say how.

Has Afoonlighting peaked? "I sure hope not. But I'm not the calculating kind. I don't sit around thinking about what'll work." What really, really matters to Caron is that he's true to Maddie and Dave. "This is an art, not a science. How do I know if I've found the truth in their characters? If I can sleep at night." By AMY WILSON Gannett News Service There are stories of how ABC's Moonlighting creator Glenn Gordon Caron will rewrite a script the night before it's to be shot.

Or truth be told as it's being shot. There are stories that he'll stop in the middle of shooting a scene, rip up the page and move on. There are stories that he'll kick around an idea for a script for months and abandon it in seconds. This may explain why Glenn Gordon Caron is not an easy man to collar. Everybody wants to talk to him.

But it's not that he's avoiding the press. He just can't fit us in. Case in point: Our conversation was first postponed by a pregnancy Cybill Shepherd's. And then came the broken collarbone Bruce's. Once he couldn't talk because he was locked in his office, writing the long-awaited consummation episode.

Another time he had slipped out in mid-day to grab a few hours' rest at a nearby hotel. A third time, he was out buying a house. It is how Caron runs his life. His intensity, his drive, his chaotic lifestyle are what make him the most innovative and enigmatic man in television. When you've got him, he is attentive.

Talking to Caron is not like talking to Moonlighting character David Addison, who could steamroll you with his glibness. "I'm certainly not David Addison. I sure like being me. I have a pretty wonderful life." Instead. Caron is soft-spoken, polite: "Is this a bad time? I can call back." (This, after three-and-a-half months of waiting for that voice on the phone.) Caron, 33, is the man who created the fast-talking detective Addison and his partner in crime and repartee, Maddie Hayes.

He wrote the Moonlighting pilot and most of the first two seasons. He edits (and won an Emmy for it). He casts, he directs, he creates. He's even in on the musical scoring of the show. And just about every page of script be it his idea on paper or not goes Bruce Willis and Cybill Shepherd of "Moonlighting" EVENING 6:00 WGN BARNEY MILLER Barney and the crew sadly close the precinct's door one last time as they move on to their new assignments.

"Ideas come from every place. I've got some very talented people now. For the first two seasons, I wrote most of it. Now, there's a lot more discussion.

It's much calmer now, we're getting good at it. You know, it takes a while to grow a staff." And no idea is ever discarded out of hand. What that really means is lots of talk, lots of writing and lots and lots of one-liners. He claims that there is "nothing extraordinary about what we do or how we do it." He worked hard to find the right David to go with Shepherd's Maddie Hayes. (He auditioned 3,000 men.

ABC rejected Bruce Willis several times before Caron convinced them they had a winner.) "The luck is not that they work well together but that they work so well together." ABC is pleased. Says ABC vice president Rick Giacaloni, "If he's not a genius, he's one of the most talented men I've ever been associated with. We love the show, we love the guy." Is ABC bothered that pep fectionist Caron can't seem to meet deadlines, can't always deliver a new show every week? "We wish we could get 22 original episodes. But if you gave us a choice between 16 great shows or 22 good ones, we'll take the 16 great ones," says Giacaloni. "You can't make 50,000 Rolls Royces a year," echoes ABC vice president Tom Mackin.

Drawn-out miniseries thing of the past NIGHTTIME SOAPS By LYNDA HIRSCH News America Syndicate Remember when a miniseries always guaranteed high ratings? They were so impressive in the ratings wars that every network wages every season, the webs continued to do big. sometimes better, and always longer miniseries. Those days seem to be gone. When ABC, under Fred Silverman's tutelage, ran Roots for a solid week it made television history. And it made ABC number one.

From that point on networks were hot on the serial trial. Just as Roofs' high rat- pushed the production date back. Thus far the remaining CBS mini-series are really overly-long movies (i.e. running four hours) which will be aired over two evenings. We get our third look at the character Kenny Rogers made famous in song when Rogers and Bruce Boxleitner reprise their previous miniseries roles in The Gambler III.
