The Shaolin monks are considered the jewels of China, and the Chinese government gave its blessing to allow them to travel to Las Vegas, he said. "As a monk, you take every corner of the world as your home," he said. Las Vegas has not only been an eye-opener for the monks. The monks, who always wear robes, usually orange, have gotten more than a few stares as they walk through the casino. They have toured Hoover Dam, ventured out on the Strip and even rode a roller coaster.

And what about an urge to slip a quarter in that nearby slot machine? It doesn't happen, the monks said. "It's no problem," said monk Shi Yan-Wen. Philadelphia has the Edgar Allan Poe National Historic Site, Baltimore brags of the Edgar Allan Poe House and Museum, and in Richmond, the Edgar Allan Poe Museum sits just a few blocks from one of the writer's former residences. Closer to Greenwich Village, Poe fans can trek to the Edgar Allan Poe Cottage in the Bronx or visit a cafe named for him at the site of one of his other homes, on the Upper West Side of Manhattan. "He lived in nine places in Manhattan alone in the decade of 1 837 to 1 846," said Lynne Brown, a university spokeswoman.

"This happens to be one of them." The university's law school just bought a structure adjacent to the Poe building and now owns the entire north side of the block, making it art appealing site for development. Ms. Brown said the school had not yet decided what to do with the building, but that demolition is under consideration. Cummings, Tom, and Sue Ingalls. Services: 10 a.m.

The Shaolin have come up with a more worldly solution. They packed up 20 Buddhist monks skilled in martial arts from their secluded monastery in the mountains of central China and headed for Sin City. The monks didn't count on winning any jackpots the monks don't gamble but they did bet that a show featuring sword fights and walking on knives would sell in Las Vegas. Everything else does. Poe House The Associated Press NEW YORK For four to eight months in the mid-1 840s just how long isn't clear Edgar Allan Poe and his ailing wife lived in a four-story brick home in Greenwich Village, at the center of New York's thriving literary scene.

Basking in the acclaim that followed the publication of The Raven a short time earlier, the master of Gothic horror either did or didn't start a major new short story, produce important poems and soak up experiences that influenced his work. The details aren't just academic. In a neighborhood where real estate now commands the rapt interest literature once enjoyed, the West Third Street home is at the center of a dispute between Poe devotees and the building's powerful landlord, New York University. The university, which dominates the area near Washington Square Park, uses the Poe building for law DEATH NOTICES Helen K. Clink, 66 ST.

"This is the last tangible connection to Poe in Manhattan," said Jeffrey Savoye of the Edgar Allan Poe Society of Baltimore. "We've torn down all the other places that he lived, places that he worked, places that he visited. There's nothing left but this house.

It's part of the literary heritage." The university contends the building has little literary significance. No one disputes that Mr. Poe lived in the 85 W. Third St. home then known as 85 Amity St.

in late 1845 and early 1846. University officials, however, point out that the master of the macabre moved several times a year for much of his life sometimes just a few steps ahead of the rent collector leaving communities up and down the East Coast boasting of "Poe houses."
