SIIRF.VFPORT-BOSSIFR TiP TlttlPS 36 Jan. 2, 1988 1987: a year of political, evangelical scandal I Jim, Tammy an ongoing spectacle grams containing explicit material. The Joan Collins-Peter Holm marathon divorce trial finally ended. He didn't get the alimony he requested. It was the Year of the Anniversary.

America celebrated the bicentennial of its Constitution. It was the best of years for the movie industry. Film factories ground out one money-maker after another, and by late November MPAA czar Jack Valenti predicted the year-end total in box office would top $4.2 billion, way ahead of 1984 record $4.03 billion. But 1987 also produced lemons many of which illustrated anew that the biggest flops can feature the biggest stars. ft i-i ti sir 11 By MARILYN BECK i Tribune Media Services The year that was.

i It was the year the Stars of Scan- dal came from political and evan- gelical circles and many of them i rushed to Hollywood to parlay in- famy into show business fame. It was the year of Gary Hart's Mimi Rogers; de-crowned Miss America Vanessa Williams and her manager Ramon Hervey; Cybill Shepherd and Dr. Bruce Op-penheim; Tom Selleck and Jillie Mack; Karen Black and film editor Steven Eckelberry; Michele Lee and network exec Fred Rappoport; director William Friedkin and L.A. TV-news co-anchor Kelly Lange; Pam Dawber and Mark Harmon; Bruce Willis and Demi Moore; rocker Bob Seger and actress-model Annette Sinclair, Beach Boy Carl Wilson and Dean Martin's daughter Gina; Geena Davis and Jeff Gold-blum; Billy Moses and Tracy Nelson. Hollywood also did its bit for the baby boom.

Cybill Shepherd gave birth to twins a boy and a girl. Daughters were welcomed by Julie and Telly Savalas; Kathleen Turner and real estate businessman Jay Weiss; Vanessa Williams and manager Ramon Hervey; Valerie Landsburg and composer James McVay; Christopher and Lynne Atkins; Morning Program personality Bob Saget and his attorney-writer wife Sherri; Allan Ladd Jr. and wife Cindra; Jim and Jan Brolin. Sons were greeted by Debra Winger and Timothy Hutton; Diana Ross and Norwegian shipping magnate Arne Naess Jennifer O'Neill and actor-songwriter Richard Alan; Pia Zadora and Meshulam Riklis; Sally Field and producer Alan Greisman; Ernie and Linda Hudson; Kevin Hooks and Cheryl Hargrove (the couple plan a spring wedding); George Wendt and Bernadette Birkett; John McEnroe and Tatum O'Neal; Peggy and Erik Estrada; Allyce Beasley and Vincent Schiavelli; Jessica Lange and Sam Shepard; Rhea Perlman and Danny DeVito; Mia Farrow and Woody Allen. More so than some other years, it seems, 1987 also will be remembered as a period when show business bade farewell to many of its greats Fred Astaire, Rita Hay-worth, Danny Kaye, Jackie Gleason, John Huston, Ray Bolger, Mary Astor, Geraldine Page, Robert Preston and Hermoine Gingold among them.

The grand and gaudy Liberace became another victim of AIDS. So did brilliant dancer-choreographer Michael Bennett. The world of dance also lost Bob Fosse and Nora Kaye. And Andres Segovia, Jascha Heifetz, Woody Herman, Buddy Rich, Sammy Kaye and Paul Butterfield left the public with musical memories. The suicides of Joan Rivers' husband, Edgar Rosenberg, and A Patch of Blue actress Elizabeth Hartman stunned Hollywood, as did the tragic fighter jet crash that took the life of 35-year-old Dean Paul Martin.

There was also Valerie Harper's Valerie walk-off and wrangle with Lorimar in 1987; the show thrived with Sandy Duncan as her replacement. As with all years, it was a time of commitment for some, a time of parting for others. Madonna and Sean finally split but by year's end, she'd dropped her divorce suit.

Leonard and Sandy Nimoy ended their marriage of nearly 33 years. Richard Pryor divorced fifth wife Flynn BeLaine. Sylvester Stallone and Brigitte Nielsen went their separate ways; so did Faye Dunaway and Terry O'Neill. And Meredith MacRae and Greg Mullavey ended their 18-year marriage. Among the many marriages: Johnny Carson and Alexis Maas; Candy Clark and Jeff Wald; Diahann Carroll and Vic Damone; author Joseph Heller and nurse Valerie Humphries; Tom Cruise and Roberts spectacle of and Tammy Bakker and Jessica Hahn; of Oral Roberts' announcement that God would call him home unless Roberts raised $8 million; of the Iran-gate hearings which made Lt.

Col. Oliver North a public idol for a minute or so, it seemed. And it was the year Fawn Hall apparently decided her experience as North's sec- retary classified-document shredder qualified her for a career in J. broadcasting. It was also the year in which some refer to "journalistic moral-'ism run amok" after Supreme nominee Douglas Ginsburg's marijuana experimentation was exposed by National Public Radio re- porter Nina Totenberg, and would-t be presidential nominee Pat Rob-l ertson and his wife were the subject of headlines for having conceived I their first child out of wedlock.

In Hollywood, as in the rest of the country, 1987 was a year of shifts and shakeups. I Film and television production barely missed a beat after L.A.'s Oc- tober earthquake; show business proved more susceptible to the aftershocks of the stock market crash 19 days later. I At CBS, NBC and ABC, the ground V2 PRICE SALE hours length and its low ratings in its first foray onto the fledgling Fox Broadcasting network. NBC's LA. 1987: David Puttnam was eased out of power at Columbia Pictures 12 months after he had signed a three-year contract with the firm. The power of the big-three networks eroded to a new low with a drop in viewership a whopping 10 percent drop from November '86 to November '87 1987: The year Paul Newman finally got his Oscar. Newman earned Best Actor laurels for The Color of Money.

It was his seventh Oscar nomination. Children of a Lesser God lead Marlee Matlin was named Best Actress, the first deaf actress to be nominated for an Academy Award.
