5 ('' -4 The Times Herald Port Huron, Mich. bb DAILY TELEVISION GUIDE Monday, April 17, 1989 Comedy tops wfth TV luieirjeirs latehight movies TV BRIEFS Vt ON TELEVISION '-Pa I IgjsJ DEEB officially supplanted "Dynasty" atop the numbers racket That's the same situation today with the "Roseanne" series, and most experts agree that next fall will find that program officially wresting away the full-season No. 1 designation from "The Cosby Show." Other highlights of of the audience tally: i With comedies so popular in prime time, it's obvious that NBC's abundance of hit sitcoms is the prime reason behind the Peacock Network's continued status as Americans network of choice. NBC enjoys four of TV's five most popular programs (and five of the top 10) and all are comedy shows. The dead-last ranking of CBS is keynoted by that network's utter lack of popular comedy programs.

The only CBS shows to work their way into the Nielsen top 10 are the mystery drama "Murder, She Wrote" and the Sunday night newsmagazine "60 Minutes." Gary Oeeb writes for North America Syndicate. Comedy continues to rule the prime-time roost on network TV with sitcoms claiming eight of the top 10 popularity slots in audience ratings. It's hard to believe that less than five years ago, the experts were proclaiming "sitcoms are dead" and the nighttime soap operas had a death-grip on the Nielsen families. Here are the 10 most-watched programs for the first 54 months of the 1988-89 television season, according to the cumulative Nielsen figures beginning in the final week of last September: 1. "The Cosby Show" NBC 2.

"Roseanne" ABC 5 3. "A Different World" -NBC 4. "Cheers" NBC 5. "The Golden Girls" NBC 6. "Murder, She Wrote" CBS 7.

"Who's the Boss?" ABC 8. "60 Minutes" CBS 9. "Anything But Love" ABC 10. "Dear John" -NBC Those numbers are slightly misleading in one specific area: Although "The Cosby Show" ranks No. 1 in the full-season popularity derby, the fact is that TMC "Barfly" (1988) Mickey Rourke, Faye Dunaway.

The catapult by Barr's Tuesday night sitcom comes too late for her to overcome Cosby's early-season lead, but it's remarkably similar to Cosby's spectacular success during his program's rookie season 4 years ago. At that time, primetime soapers "Dynasty" and "Dallas" were the most popular weekly programs, with "The Cosby Show" ranking third in the full-season tabulation. But in the final half of that season, Cosby whipped the serials virtually every week. KID VEEP: Former CBS vice president Michael Brockman has been named by the ABC Television Network Group as president of daytime, children's and late night entertainment division. The new ABC division was created to recognize the importance of these three areas of TV entertainment NAME THAT TUNE: How close to the truth is the story line on CBS' "Wiseguy" about music-industry corruption? Rolling Stone magazine asked some insiders in its April 20 issue, 2nd the reviews were mixed, although most feel it's generally correct, if overstated. "It's scary how close it is," said Danny Glass of Chrysalis Records.

"There are factors that are stretching it, but the statements on Debbie Harry (who plays a washed-up star making a tenuous comeback) are very close." Entertainment lawyer Leonard Marks says the music biz "lends itself to these shady practices, because artists are so eager to get contracts and put records out. -They're easy targets for abuses." GOOD OLD DAD: The Family Channel certainly won't rock the I family that watches TV together its latest stunt: a seven-hour "Father Still Knows Best" planned for Father's Day, June 18. "Bill" Stillfield (Doug Barr).

Those who've followed the sitcom know Smart met her off-; camera husband on the show: Richard Gilliland, who played the I role of Annie Potts' beau J.D. and who is now on CBS' Monday sitcom, "Heartland."
