MILLSIDE Continued from Page 1A Help from leaders On Thursday, Millside's Family Community Council (its parent group) sponsored a special dinner-reception for Harsens Island families before the school's open house and meetthe night. "That reception was really nice because we were able to meet the families; some of the Samantha Zakalowski Marinna Marlow kids were really nervous," fifthgrade teacher Stephanie Stay said. Stay and the other fifth -grade teacher created a brochure for the Samantha new students to explain how fifth Zakalowski grade operates.

Stay said during the reception teachers made sure the Harsens Island parents had as many of their questions answered as possible. Jacob Marinna Kapanowski, 7, of Marlow Harsens Island said he wasn't nervous Monday because of the reception. "I was fine," Jacob said. "I was here for the open house. I just hung around the classroom most of the night." He also recognized some of the same educational tools in his new classroom, Renee Wilson's second grade, that he used at the the Harsens Island school.

For the older Harsens Island students, the larger building meant a larger change. Samantha came to Millside last year in part because her parents had heard the island school might close and they wanted their daughter to have time to adjust to a new place. While the island school with its multi-age classrooms was challenging for younger students who listened to older ones' lessons, Samantha thinks she learned more at Millside. "If you need help, they'll it individually," she said, adding she likes having two teachers who teach only fifth grade, each doing two subjects. Fifth-grader Shannon Harvey, 10, is excited to be at Millside this year because it's a bigger school. "So you get used to it, 'cause when you get up into middle school, then you get embarrassed and stuff 'cause it's bigger and you have to find your classes," Shannon said.

Harsens middle-schoolers attend Algonquin Middle School, across the playground from Millside. Szymanski said last year the fifth-graders from the island were invited along on Millside's fifth-grade year-end celebration to meet some of their future classmates. She said the kids sent a thank- you note for helping them make new friends. Contact Hillary Whitcomb Jesse at (810) 989-6277 or block, stolen auto. MUSSEY TWP.

Ultimately, the decision rests with Granholm, a Democrat, and her adjutant general, Maj. Gen. Thomas Cutler, who oversees the Michigan National Guard. They have said they would consult with the state's congressional delegation, the Air Force and the National Guard Bureau to determine the best use for the planes. On Monday, Granholm and Cutler's offices tentatively praised the idea of dividing the planes between the two bases but said more discussion was needed.

"We feel that idea has great merit and it's one we will pursue in future discussions to see if that's the best answer for Michigan," said Brig. Gen. Kencil Heaton, Michigan's assistant adjutant general for air. Said Granholm spokeswoman Liz Boyd, "We, too, believe the concept of a 12-12 split has some merit. With that said, we need to let the process continue.

We really won't know the final on this until late fall." The idea of dividing the aircraft between Battle Creek and Selfridge was first proposed to the Base Realignment and Closure Commission by Cutler last month during a visit by commis- HURON, MICHIGAN 3A "There's no need to be MATT MARSDEN, spokesman, Rep. 8 to President Bush, who can either accept it or send it back to the commission for another review. Congress then has 45 days to either accept or reject the entire proposal. Miller's change of heart Monday came with the realization that if the A-10s are split between the two bases, Selfridge will have only 20 aircraft stationed there, a loss of 11 planes which would be mean fewer jobs. Selfridge now has 31 aircraft stationed there. Because of some other reshuffling, the base would see an overall net gain of one plane, for a total of 32, if all 24 A- 10s are sent there.
