He received numerous awards during his terms, including recognitions from the American Public Works Association, the Shreveport Junior Chamber of Commerce, the Shreveport Beautification Foundation and the Shreveport Rose Society. In 1966, he received an unprecedented endorsement from the Shreveport City Council for his reelection as public works commissioner.

The World War I veteran was a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers, the Louisiana Engi neering Society, the American Public Works Association, the American Road Builders Association, the American Association of Airport Executives, the Shreveport Kiwanis Club, the Elks Club, the Petroleum Club and the American Legion. Mr. Mitchell retired as commissioner in 1968 during his ninth consecutive term in the office. A rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. today in Osborn Funeral Home with the Rev.

Frederick Ponder, acting pastor of St. John Berchmans Co-Cathedral, officiating. The funeral Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday in St. John Berchmans Co-Cathedral with the Rev.

George B. Hamilton officiating. Burial will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery. Mr.

Mitchell's survivors include his wife, Lillian Mitchell; a son, Robert Mitchell of Shreveport; five grandchildren and one H. Lane Mitchell, Shreveport's public works commissioner from 1934 to 1968, died Wednesday in his home at 350 Albany. He was pronounced dead about 7 p.m. at Schum-pert Medical Center. He was born Aug.

17, 1895, in Dublin, Texas, had lived in Shreveport since 1900 and attended local public schools. He graduated from Valparaiso University in Indiana and was a practicing engineer for 15 years before he was elected to his first term as public works commissioner. During his eight and one-half terms as commissioner, Mr. Mitchell was responsible for numerous street and drainage projects, including Line Avenue, Youree Drive, the extension and widening of Lin wood Avenue, the Allen Avenue viaduct, Hearne Avenue, East Kings Highway, 70th Street, Jewella Road, Hollywood Avenue and Interstate 20's location. He was also instrumental in the paving of Bayou Pierre and in improving drainage facilities in South Highlands.

Mr. Mitchell was also instrumental in providing backyard garbage pickup service without charging homeowners a fee and in the planting of roses along the city's boulevards. He was one of the central figures in the 1949 battle over the location of the Shreveport municipal airport and waged a successful campaign to locate it on Hollywood Avenue. Mr. Mitchell was also well known for acquiring more land for city projects than was needed for initial construc She is survived by two daughters, Betty McGuire of Shreveport and Dorothy Hzyner of North Little Rock, and two sons, Billy B.

Cross died Tuesday night in Willis-Knighton Hospital after a lenghty illness. A native of Emmett, he had been a resident of Shreveport for 30 years. Mr. Cross was a salesman for Foremost Dairy, a World War II veteran and a member of Central Christian Church. He is survived by his wife, Mrs.

Lucille Cross of Shreveport; one son, Jack Cross of San Antonio, Texas; one half-sister, Octa Cates of Corpus Christi, Texas; three brothers, Wesley Cross of Bossier City, John Cross of El Dorado, and Paul Franks, a half-brother, of Dallas, Texas. Pallbearers will be Ivan Miley, Wayne Wilson, S.E. Schneider, Ed Burks, Willis Smith and F.J. Pearce. ARCADIA Alline C.

Woman freed from ear A Shreveport Fire Department rescue unit was needed to free a 76-year-old woman from her car after it was struck by a tractor-trailer rig on Hearne Avenue Wednesday afternoon. Maggie B. McClure of 4501 Velva Ave. was listed in stable condition at Schumpert Medical Center with abrasions and bone fractures.

Ms. McClure was eastbound on Emery Street. Her car was struck by a tractor-trailer rig being driven southbound on Hearne Avenue by Richard B. Smith, 57, of 801 McDade St. in Bossier City, police said.

SAlE 4Hj Arrests have been made by Shreveport police in two of three armed robberies that occurred over a three day period last week. In the latest arrest, Freeman Palmer 24, of 558 Douglas St. was booked into city jail early Wednesday morning on a charge of armed robbery. Detective C.R.
