Alabama's blockers opened a huge hole at the line and Nathan outraced State defenders to the goal to give the Tide a 21-0 edge in the second period. The victory put Alabama's record at 8-1 and 4-0 in defense of its conference title, while State now is 5-3 and 1-2 in SEC play. It was Alabama's 21st consecutive victory over the Bulldogs since Bear Bryant became the Tide coach.

Nathan also scored on a 6-yard pass from Jeff Rutledge after State had closed the Alabama margin to 21-14. Alabama's victory came despite a sparkling 429-yard passing performance by Bulldog quarterback Dave Marler, who hit on 28 of 46, and operated almost exclusively from the shotgun formation after State fell behind. Major Ogilvie scored twice for Alabama on 1-yard runs in the first period, ruining State's mark of not giving up any points in an opening quarter this season. (AP) The Florida Gators responded to alumni pressure on Coach Doug Dickey's job with a resounding 31-7 Southeastern Conference football victory over Auburn Saturday, keyed by quarterback John Brantley's running and passing and Bill Fiorillo's two pass interceptions. Brantley ran 11 yards for one touchdown, passed 33 yards to wide receiver Cris Collinsworth for another and drove the Gators consistently against a slower Auburn defense. Fullback David Johnson dived 1 yard for each of two touchdowns, capping a pair of 67-yard drives.

Auburn's chief offense rested in running back Joe Cribbs, who gained 111 yards on 30 carries, caught two passes for 16 yards and threw for 13. The only Tiger touchdown came early stages. 4-ranked Nebraska humiliated Kansas Saturday, 63-21, while setting a school record for total offense. Nebraska's bombs-away offense gouged the outmanned Jayhawks for 516 yards rushing and 283 passing, scoring at will as the Huskers rolled up 799 yards in toti offense. This broke Nebraska's single-game record of 655 set against Hawaii in 1976 and is the worst pounding Kansas ever absorbed. The Huskers led only 7-0 at the end of the first quarter, but roared away in a 35-point blitz in the second period. Now 8-1 overall and 5-0 in the Big Eight, Nebraska's precision offense was unstoppable in the second period, breezing on touchdown drives of 51 yards in eight plays, 64 yards in one, 53 in four, 72 in four and 76 in four.

Sorley, senior quarterback, scored Nebraska's second touchdown on a 1-yard run early in the second quarter. Then Johnson zipped 64 yards for a touchdown, tight end Junior Miller caught a 44-yard touchdown pass, Tim Smith snared a 17-yard touchdown pass and Miller caught another 44 yard aerial. Johnson, who had 192 yards in only 10 carries, also teamed with second-string quarterback Tim Hager on a 78-yard touchdown pass in the third period. (AP) Veteran quarterback Scott Burk mystified the Missouri defense with his running and passing as he led his Oklahoma State Cowboys to a surprisingly easy 35-20 Big Eight football win over the Tigers Saturday.

Burk was a one-man band during the first half, shocking the Tigers by rushing for 60 yards and a touchdown and passing for another 87 yards. However, despite the fact the Cowboys carried a 17-7 lead into the dressing room at the half, it took a zany series of fumble recoveries for them to regain the momentum and cinch the win. The unusual exchange came in the third quarter with the Pokes leading only 20-14. Cowboy defenders knocked Missouri return specialist Bill Whitaker loose from a fourth-down punt and linebacker Dan Hammond came up with the ball on the Missouri three. On the following play, Oklahoma State running back Ed Smith let loose of the football, fumbling it into the end zone.

But tuck was with the Cowboys as split end Mel Campbell managed to pin down the bouncing ball for a touchdown. Brown, a 6-foot-2, 220-pound senior, shattered the single-game UCLA rushing record, gaining 274 yards on 26 carries. He held the previous mark of 220 yards against Washington in 1976. Brown's first touchdown run, with 13:41 to play, gave the Bruins a 10-6 advantage, their first lead of the day. It came two plays after Oregon's Pat English missed a 29-yard field goal attempt.

Peter Boermeester gave the Bruins' some breathing room they ultimately needed by kicking a 35-yard field goal with 8:32 to go and a 44-yarder with 6:50 left. Oregon's Reggie Young capped a 63-yard drive by plunging two yards with 2:07 remaining, making it 16-14. But shortly later, Brown scored on his second long gallop to clinch the victory. Iowa State senior tailback Dexter Green moved into eight position on the all-time conference scoring list when he slid off a tackier for a one-yard score in the first quarter and the Wildcats never threatened. It was the Cyclones' second straight conference win after three straight losses and pushed their overall record to 6-3. Kansas State, 1-4 and 2-7, penetrated Iowa State territory eight times, but was stymied by a big-play defense and its own mistakes.

After Green's touchdown on the Cyclones' second possession, Steve Johnson booted a 30-yard field goal in the second quarter. On ISU's next possession, Cerrato came into the game for Walter Grant and rolled around the left side virtually untouched on a play he ran successfully three times last week against Kansas. Terry Rubley gave the Cyclones an insurance touchdown in the final period when he hit Ray Preston on a 15-yard TD. (AP) Halfback Billy Sims exploded 59 yards for a third-quarter touchdown and fullback Kenny King added a 74-yard run for a final-pen-od score, powering top-ranked Oklahoma past stubborn Colorado 28-7 Saturday in Big Eight football.

Big Eight A record Folsom Field crowd of 53,553 saw Sims rush for 221 yards the most ever against a Colorado team as the Sooners raised their overall record to 9-0 and their conference mark to 50. Colorado slipped to 6-3 overall and 2-3 in the Big Eight. The Sooners, guilty of numerous turnovers and limited to 78 total yards in the first half, broke a 7-7 tie when Sims took a pitchout to the right side and accelerated into the clear for the go-ahead score with 6:12 left in the third quarter. Later in the quarter, after the first of two interceptions by Sooner safety Mike Babb, Oklahoma quarterback Thomas Lott fired a 20-yard TD pass to tight end Forrest Valora. King put the game out of reach by bolting up the middle and outracing the Colorado defenders early in the final stanza.

Colorado, plagued by a misfiring air game, had three prime scoring opportunites late in the first half, but the Buffaloes were able to capitalize only once. The Sooners turned the ball over at their 23, 13 and 9 yard lines on successive possessions. James Mayberry ran 4 yards for Colorado's lone TD after the first turnover. But the other two threats ended when Mayberry was stopped for no gain on fourth down and quarterback Bill Solomon was intercepted in the end zone by cor-nerback Jay Jimerson. The Buffs threatened again in the final quarter, reaching the Sooner 1-yard line.

But Solomon was tripped up by Sooner linebacker Daryl Hunt on a third down play, and Solomon was sacked by Babb on fourth down. With Solomon completing four of his first five pass attempts, Colorado showed a balanced offense in the The Stepper is about to take another walk, this time to Oklahoma City. There are some fight fanatics who may still remember Freddie "Stepper" Harris, the Bossier City banger who a year ago when his record was a fairly respectable 14-and-5, and at a time he was wading through rivals like Jimmy Heair, George Anderson and Marion Thomas was regarded as the fifth best junior welter in this entire country by the resident experts at The Ring. The Stepper, alas, fell on hard times since last October. For one thing, he regarded road work as an unnecessary nuisance.

For another, he twice ran afoul of a stubborn trialhorse named Rocky Ramon. For a third, his disinterest in training did not set well with his manager Joe "Pops" King. So Freddie, at the advanced age of 23, went on the shelf for a remedial period and only recently has worked his way back into the good graces of King. As a result "Pops" has somehow steered Freddie into a ten-round spot- against No. 1-ranked featherweight contender Sean O'Grady.

(AP) -Tailback Charles White rushed for 201 yards and the go-ahead touchdown, but the sixth-ranked Southern California Trojans needed several big defensive plays Saturday to register a 13-7 Pacific-10 football victory over The West Stanford. Defensive back Ronnie Lott got Southern Cal out of early trouble with an end zone pass interception, taking the ball away from tight end Marty Smith late in the first period. Stanford tailback Darrin Nelson threw the pass, with the Cardinals leading 7-0 on Steve Dils' 13-yard touchdown pass to Ked Margerum. A 33-yard run by White set up a 34-yard field goal by Frank Jordan in the second quarter, and White dived one yard for Southern Cal's only touchdown 37 seconds before half-time.

The Trojans increased their lead to 13-7 in the third quarter when Jordan booted a 38-yard field goal, but he missed an attempt in the final quarter and Stanford threatened to score on a drive eiigineered by quarterback Steve Dils, On a third-and-2 at the Southern Cal 27-yard line, Dils lost nine yards when sacked by linebacker Riki Gray, and the Cardinals lost the ball when a fourth down completion went for only nine yards. The Trojans made their Pac-10 record 4-1 arid stand 7-1 overall. White's 201 yards in 38 carries his best game ever increased his three-year total to 3,547 and he moved past OJ. Simpson to rank third on USC's alltime rushing list. Stanford is 2-3 in the conference an 5-4 overall.

arris to The articles of combat are signed for a week from Thursday (Nov. 16th) at the Fair Grounds in Oak City. There are two things that should be made public about Sean O'Grady, who as a professional puncher has won 59 of 60 starts under the protective management of his father-benefactor, Pat O'Grady. The first is that Sean has outgrown the 126-pound class thus removing himself from title consideration with champion Danny "Little Red" Lopez and the second is that Sean NEVER loses in Oak City. King, who gets around, is well aware of the latter home cooking situation.

Back on June 10th, as an example, Sean was bathed in buckets of his own blood for four rounds of a nationally televised appearance, the result of an ugly slash over his right eye, but managed to get into the fifth round against Japanese tormentor Shig Fukuyama. Sean thereupon tagged Shig, dumping him on his derriere, and a very abrupt "TKO" was promptly signaled by referee Rudy Jordan. "I know all about that," says King. That's why I made a deal with them to name my own referee." Young Sean a couple of weeks ago tested the resultant scar tissue over his eyebrow with a workout against one Al Franklin in Denver. It was over in six rounds.

They tell me this Franklin, in age, is at least on the uphill side of 48. So this is the situation for Stepper. He's got a nice left hook, and most likely will be taking potshots at the right side of O'Grady's profile. Then, if he manages to draw claret, he'll have to remain upright. Even then, that's not a guarantee against an O'Grady in Oak City.
