BY BETTY ROCKWELL In one of the most heated fall elections of recent years, 14 out of 35 candidates were chosen October 15. Electioneering in the form of serenades and posters has had the student body on edge throughout the week. Even though the only Valley candidate was defeated in the School of Business Administration, Millard Dilg of Harlingen ran a race that he can well be proud of. Pi Bet Phi sorority, of which Gail McDavitt of Brownsville is an active member, entertained with an after- dinner coffee Thursday night in honor of pledges.

Members of the Alpha Tau Omega fraternity, among whom are Henry Holland, John Mackintosh, and Kermit Cro- macfc, all of Brownsville, were special guests. Mary-Agar and Charlotte Hinkley of San Benito were guests of Catherine Ptigsley of San Benito, who is staying at Kirby Hall, and Frances Grimsell of San Benito, who is staying at Scottish Rite Dormitory, over the week end. Entertainment for the girls inclxided the grid- graph game between Texas and Oklahoma University a a afternoon at Gregory Gym and Sunday dinner at Scottish Rite dormitory with Kelsey Stuart of Harlingen, and Pearl Goodman of San Benito as other guests. Other Valley students seen at the grid- graph game were John Sanders, Kelsey Stuart of Harlingen, Charles Pugsley, Billy Gilbert and Paul Cocke of San Benito, and Morris McKay of Brownsville. ATong the more fortunate students who were able to see the game at Dallas were Gordon Thomas of San Benito, Mattie Belle Ross of Edinburg and Gail McDavitt of Brownsville.

The University won over Oklahoma University by a score of 19 to 0. Drexe-11 Carr of San Benito. played in the band, which attended the game. -Virginia Blum of but formerly of Brownsville, entertained with a horse-back riding party Sunday afternoon at Westenfield Riding academy. Among the guests was Betty Rockwell of Brownsville.

Mattie Belle Ross Edinburg was a guest at a dinner for members of the Girls' Glee club. The banquet was held in the junior ballroom of the Texas Union at 6 o'clock. A formal candlelight dinner honoring freshman girls of the Woman's building was given by staff members of the building Thursday night. Among the freshmen honored were Mary Jane Harryman of Harlingen and Helen Virginia Scott of Ray- 'mondville. The Woman's building held its first open house of the long session Friday night after the pep rally for Saturday's game with Centenary.

Vivian Mathews of La Ferla was among the hostesses for the event. Charlotte Lissner of Mission was among the girls who were honored Friday night at Grace Hall when the management entertained with an open house. The entertainment carried out in the form of a Hallowe'en party. Amalie and Lillian Runyon of Brownsville were among guests at a birthday party given for Miss Drusilla Perkins. Betty Rockwell of Brownsville was elected publicity manager for the Alpha Chi Omega sorority of w.hich she is a pledge.

The weekly chapter dinner and pledge meeting were held Monday night- at the sorority house. Frank Ashley of Brownsville has been approved tor membership in the Curtain club, dramatic organization of the University, by the board of directors. Lillian Runyon of Brownsville was elected vice-president of Newman Hall for this year. The first meeting of Tee-Wai- Hiss, outing club of the University, was held Wednesday afternoon at the Woman's gym. Among the prospective members was Elizabeth Washington of Brownsville.

What's this being told of Frances Grimsell of San Benito and Kelsey Stuart of Harlingen eating ice cream at midnight in the dormitory with sterilized shoe horns? Gordon Thomas of San Benito kept Ouster Yates from being embarrassed by speaking to her as she walked past the Phi Gamma Delta House. The rest of the Phi Gams were lined up on either side of the walk as she was going over to Scottish Rite dormitory. Bridge Club Meets With Mrs. Lovinger Mrs. Charley Lovinger entertained members of the Lucky 13 Bridge club in her home Thursday afternoon.

During the games Mrs. Arthur Pitt was the holder of high score for the club. Mrs. George Baker was awarded an interesting trophy. The hostess had besides club members three extra guests who were" presented with small gifts.

Hamilton and Leigh Stanley. The next meeting of the club will be held in the home of Mrs. O. C. Hamilton.

The Silk Stocking Contract Bridge club met in the home of Mrs. B. Goolsby Thursday- afternoon Lovely flowers -appropriate 'to the season of Hallowe'en decorated the rooms where the players were seated. Tallies and other accessories depicted the same color note of the blossoms When scores were totaled Mrs. J.

The Thursday Contract Bridge club met in the home of Mrs. John Bowie. Cosmos and golden dewdrops were used about the playing rooms. When playing had been concluded Mrs. R.

J. East was presented with the award. In the late afternoon a delicious salad course was served which also carried out the colors of'orange and yellow. Those enjoying thg delightful meeting were Mesdames Ed. Hinkley, R.

The. next of the club will be in the 'home of Mrs. E. Blount. The El Jueves Contract Bridge club met in the home of Mrs.

Ralph Thacker when she entertained the members and one table of -guests. On the mantel a large jack-o-lantern was placed in which an electric lamp had been lighted. Tallies and scorepads were also in keeping with the spirit of Hallowe'en; Tabit covers were in yellow linen. During the games Mrs. A.

H. Lamm was awarded guest trophy, Mrs. R. C. Place was holder of high score among the club mem- second high among the club guests.

Guests other than club members included, Mes.dames Charles Green, A. H. Lamm, Elmer Morris and H. Lindblad. Mrs.

John Mealing, a new member, was received in the club. In the late afternoon a delicious salad course was served. The Wednesday afternoon contract bridge club met in the home of Mrs. Ezra Dodson with all club members present. Pretty arrangements of seasonal blossoms adorned the home.

When scores were counted Mrs. A. R. Motheral was presented with a gift. In the late afternoon a tempting salad course was served.

Knox Smith was a charming hostess Wednesday evening when the members of the Wednesday Evening Bridge club met at the Stonewall Jackson for dinner. Following an: enjoyable repast the guests'- assembled" in the home of Mrs. F. C. Ludden for "the games of bridge.

When scores were James, C. Ludden- were presented with awards; Members of the American Legion Auxiliary of San Benito met in the home of their new president, Mrs. W. W. Cotton, on the San Benito-Harlingen Highway Tuesday evening.

A delightful business and social period was enjoyed -with a splendid jgroup in attendance. An interesting outline of the year's work was presented by Mrs. A. G. decided to attend a luncheon to be given at the Aztec ion- -November- -llth, to which non --members, of Auxiliary may attend by making res- ervatons.

During an. especially pleasing series of contests Mrs. Louis Hirsch was winner of the success award. Other phases -of entertainment -included a -mock wedding which was arranged by Mrs. Joe Spears and Mrs.

A. G. Demers. Before the departure of the guests a tempting refreshment course was served. The next meeting of the auxiliary will be held in the home of Mrs.

D. W. Day. All Day Convention Of Valley Federation To Be Important Event Program for the 42nd semi-annual convention of the Rio Grande Federation of Women's Clubs will open at the Methodist church in Brownsville at nine o'clock Tuesday morning, October 23rd with the president, Mrs. J.

J. Murray of Harlingen presiding. Hostess plubs for the convention will be the Brownsville City Federation, the Athenian, Brownsville Study, Learners and Travel clubs of Brownsville. Convention officials will be Mrs. J.

J. Murray, Harlingen, president, Mrs. Florence J. Scott, Rio Grande City, program chairman, Miss Ida Campbell, Harlingen, time keeper, Mrs. Marvin Hall, Brownsville, local chairman, Learners Club Has Initial Gathering B.

M. Cromack, president of the Learners 'club, entertained members of the club at her home in Jardin Tuesday afternoon. Members answered roll call with some item concerning the Texas Centennial. By special request, Mrs. R.

B. Creager told of some of the high lights of the undertaking. Mrs. C. W.

Goigin explained how the federal government plans to help by coining fifty-cent pieces commemorating the event, the coins to be sold for a dollar each and the profit derived to go toward the Centennial expense fund- Mrs. Harbert Davenport, who has been in Buenos Aires during the past summer, gave a very interesting account of her trip which took her down the east coast of South America by boat, across to Santiago, Chile, by ah-, and then up the west coast, through the Panama Canal and home by boat. Following this interesting description, the club joined in singing "The Eyes of Texas" with Mrs. J. A.

MuckVroy at the piano. After the business session the members were served a light refreshment course from a table attractive with yellow cosmos and presided over by Mrs. Lena More, vice president 'of the organization. Louis Demeaville ten members and -three guests present! As the club will study Texas history, roll-call vvas answered by each member giving tome topic on Texas history. Mrs. Louis Rank then gave a general outline on historical data of Texas. Following the business session the hostess served a light refreshment course. The club will meet November 1 with Mrs.

Ivan Ford and will have as its topic at that time "Texas under the Spanish Flag." UDC 'Chapter Has Meeting The Magruder Ford Chapter of the Daughters of the Confederacy met Thursday morning at the home of Mrs. W. K. Mendenhall with the newly installed chairman, Mrs. Fannie D.

Putegnat, presiding. Mrs. J. K. Wells, historian, presented the lesson topic on the war on the frontier of Texas, including the campaign into New Mexico, the fight on the Frio, and the repulse of Gen.

Victoria Ward Has Large Gathering For P. Meet The Parent-Teacher association of the Victoria Ward school held'its first meeting of the current year with the Mrs. Troy Porter, presiding over a large assembly. Before regular business session Mrs. Howard Cummins spoke on the proposed tax limitation amendment to be voted upon in the next election, and urged all members to use their influence against it.

The association then went on record" as being opposed to the amendment. During the business session officers for the year 1934-35 were elected. Those elected were Mrs. Vincent Stevenson, president; Mrs. Elies, vice president; and Miss Gladys Trtfnble, secretary-treasurer.

Mi's. Bill Deen was appointed reporter. Announcement Of Marriage Is Surprise Coming as a surprise to her many friends here is the announcement ot the marriage of Mrs. Andrea Ortiz de Fernandez to Mr. Samuel Edward Bayless of Atlanta, which was celebrated Sunday Oct.

14 in the rectory of tshe Sacred Heart church, the Rev. Father Cartier officiating. Only immediate members of both families and very close friends were present for the ceremony. Mrs. W.

F. MacDonald and Mrs. Charles Turner acted as madrinas, other witnesses being Miss Bell Bayless, sister of the groom, Miss Ana Maria Pernandez, daughter of the bride by a former marriage, and Mr. Adrian Ortiz, father of the bride. The bride wore midnight blue silk lace with a small felt hat and all accessories to match.

She also wore a diamond brooch, an heirloom in the groom's family, which was the groom's gift. Following the ceremony members of the bridal party and a few close friends gathered at the home of the bride for a buffet supper. Mrs. Bayless is a member of one of Brownsville's most prominent Spanish families. Her father as a boy of 17 came to Brownsville in 1878, from Santander, Spain, and was the son of a famous Spanish engineer, Claudio Ortiz.

Her mother was Miss Manuela Buitureira, daughter of Daniel Buitureira, who was for many years a customs and quarantine officer at Port Isabel, and was among the first police officers of Brownsville. Mr. Bayless is the only son of Mrs. Abbie E. and the late Major Samuel Lewis Bayless.

A graduate of the University of Georgia, Mr. Bayless has been residing in Brownsville for only a year. Mr. and Mrs. Bayless will make their home in Brownsville.

Mrs. Sarran was accompanied by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. P.

Brown and Waeir son, Rudolph, who will spend the winter months here. Convention Announcements Of Importance Are Made There have been a number of important announcements made concerning the convention of the Valley federated club to be held here Tuesday, October 23. All local delegates are urged to register between 8 and 8:30 a. m. Tuesday in the basement of the Methodist church in order to facilitate the registration of out- of-town delegates.

Mrs. Nathan Moore, who has charge of the reservations for the luncheon to be held at 1 p. m. Tuesday at the Central Christian church, has requested that all Brownsville women who intend to attend tha luncheon get in touch with her for reservations before Monday. This is essential for the making up of a temporary estimate cf the number of those to be served.

Tickets for the luncheon may be purchased during the registration at the Methodist church at the set price of 50c apiece. Bearing out the idea that every Brownsville woman considers herself hostess to delegates to the convention, the women of Brownsville have planned an informal tea between 4:30 and 6 p. m. Tuesday. Mrs.

G. W. Johnson has kindly oi- fered her home for this purpose. All Brownsville women cordially invited to attend. Alter a siioic sojourn here, the young couple expect to return to Illinois to make their home.

Miss. Mattie Hidalgo County Home demonstration agent and Mr. R. W. Burwell, Hidalgo county agent gave a most interesting demonstration on "Beef Canning' Thursday at the home of Mrs.

H. L. Henson. Mr. Burwer supervised the cutting of the beef lecturing on that art and the various cuts of meat.

Miss Wilroy supervised the canning of the products. About 100 men and women' attended this demonstration throughout the day, with about 55 enjoyini the covered dish luncheon at noon The products canned during the day were roast, steak, stew, hamburger, chili, and soup stock; Clubs represented at this meeting were Worth- While, Southern Star, Llano Grande, Just We Neigh bors, Home Makers and Campaquas with many visitors, who do noi belong to any club. Mardi Club Is Entertained Mrs. H. D.

Seago was a delightfu hostess to members of the Mardi Bridge club in her home Tuesday afternoon. Mrs. Bascom Cox was holder ot high score in the games, which were foEowed by the serving of a dessert course by the hostess. Mrs. Prank Brown will entertain the Mardi club October- 30.

George Hamilton, who gave one of Kipling's. Mrs. J. S. Duncan, a guest of the club for the afternoon gave from memory Kipling's poem, the "Road to En-Dor," and the "Fool's Prayer" by Edward Rowland Sill.

Cleanup Plans Started By Civic League The Civic League held its first meeting of the club year at the Chamber of Commerce afternoon, with Mrs. G. W. John- ion presiding. The resignation if Mrs.

Buckley as delegates to the Dity Federation meeting to be held Thursday, a clean up campaign was discussed, with special emphasis on the cutting of weeds in vacant on the main streets.

A committee was assigned to ask the cooperation of The Herald in making the campaign a success. Mesdames D. P. Gay, Grider Perkins and Willie A. George were appointed as delegates to the Valley Federation convention, and Mrs.

Mrs. Laura Hoyler and her daughter, Mrs. K. W. Blow, entertained members and friends of the First Christian church of San Benito at a silver tea Tuesday afternoon.

Dancing was the chief diversion of the evenng. Mrs. W. D. Hickman, the former Miss Iva Hope McNeil, was honoree at a surprise miscellaneous shower given by the Young People of the Church of God, who assembled the home of the pastor, Rev.

W. McNeil. Many beautiful and useful- gifts were presented the honoree. and the evening hours were spent pleasantly by the group in viewing the gifts and in games. Refreshments were served to 45 guests.

The program meeting and reception honoring new members given Thursday evening at the Woman's building was one of the outstanding meetings of the year of the Business and Professional Woman's club. The assembly room was lavishly decorated with pink roses and corona with background of ferns. Greeting guests at the door were Miss Annie Gregg, Miss Myrtle Benedict, Mi's. Velma Otto, Mrs. Allie Looney, Mrs.

Isla Jones and Mrs. Gertrude Collins. Miss Gregg, president, presided and introduced Miss Julia O'Brien of Brownsville, guest speaker of che evening. Miss O'Brien, prominent in both district and state federation of the Business and Professional Women's clubs, spoke on the subject 'of "Membership" in keeping with the program theme, "Membership and Emblem." Entertainment numbers included a tap and song by Patricia Hoskins and an acrobatic number by Jerry Chastain with Mrs. L.

W. Hoskins accompanying at the piano. Maurice Nesmith of San Benito gave an entertaining specialty number as a reading and bird music. Mrs. Gertrude Collins, membership chairman introduced the new members as follows: Miss Lois.I3a.l- lard, Miss Idabelle Edna Bobo, Miss Doris Doifthit, Miss Johnny Ford, Miss Doris.
