Saginaw Accused officers back on patrol: Two police officers charged with misconduct that heightened the city's racial tensions are to go back on patrol by Friday. Saginaw County Circuit Judge William Crane on Monday sentenced Dennis Howe Jr. and Christopher Boes to two years of probation on misdemeanor charges of neglect of duty and assault and battery.

Howe, 32, and Boes, 28, pleaded no contest last month in exchange for dismissal of a felony kidnapping count. A judge previously dropped a charge of ethnic intimidation. The officers were accused of running a black teen out of their mostly white neighborhood, hitting him, threatening him and dropping him off in a predominantly black area in a 1994 off-duty incident. Crane ordered them each to pay a $250 fine, $250 in court costs, a $720 supervision fee and $60 to the Crime Victim Rights Fund. The judge, who could have sentenced them to a year in jail, ordered them to perform 225 hours of community service for disadvantaged children, undergo anger management counseling and maintain full-time employment.

Fire officials say an electrical problem caused a fire Wednesday that destroyed a home. The fire began about 3:20 a.m. at a two-story home at 2373 Gunn Road. Officials estimate damage at $63,000. Resident Scott Jordan said he woke up to light smoke in his bedroom.

He called 9 1 1 after trying unsuccessfully to put the fire out with a hose. Delhi Township Fire Detective Larry Stacy said a wall behind the electrical meter was badly burned. The fire spread from there into the bathroom closet. The fire began near an electrical socket in a first floor bedroom, said Delhi Township Fire Chief Robert Hudson. Stanton Ex-Judge protests kiss suit settlement: A former udge whose sentences included a iteral slap on the wnst to a man convicted of spouse abuse argued unsuccessfully against an out-of-court settlement of a suit filed while he was in office.

Jessica Troeger of Sheridan had sued former Montcalm County District Judge Joel Gehrke, accusing him of violating her civil rights by offering to terminate her probation in exchange for a hug and a kiss. Lawyers for the county reached a $60,000 settlement with Troeger on June 4, the third day of the trial. Gehrke, 38, denied the woman's allegations and opposed the settlement. On Monday, Gehrke asked visiting Judge Paul Chamberlain to keep both the settlement and an order dismissing the charges against him out of the court record until the state Court of Appeals ruled on a motion Gehrke submitted. "The bottom line is, you're the guy with the robe, judge," Gehrke told Chamberlain.
