The soft coal wage dispute which has set back production an estimated 30.000.000 tons since April 1 same up Friday before a mediation panel intent on quick reopening ot the mines. Some coal men predicted that the three-man panel would bring the reopening Issue to the fore at-'once by making a direct request to the miners and operators to resume digging and remove the threat of a serious fuel shortage from r.atlonaJ defense industries. While President Roosevelt's board got down to business on the coal controversy, CIO officials declared strike at the big Glenn Martin airplane factory nt Baltimore, and another CIO group completed balloting on a strike call against General Motor Corporation's 61 widely scattered production units. The CIO United Mine Workers, headed by John L. Lewis, demanded a general wage Increase to S7 day, compared with $6 a day in the north and J5.60 in the south, scales which prevailed under the two-year contract which expired March 31. Northern operators finally agreed to accede to the union's terms. Southern producers, however, withdrew from the contract negotiations declaring they could not continue in business If the wage differential were eliminated.

However, the southerners offered their on 11 per cent wage Increase. Lewis' group held out for uniform contract In all mines. Seriousness of the mounting fuel shortage was underlined by two official agencies. The war department said the shortage had caused "drastic" curtailment In production of ammonia, steel, textiles and other products needed for defense. The Bureau of Mines said only about two weeks supply of coal now was above ground, CIO leaders, who claim their organization embraces 3.20o of the 17 000 workers in the Martin airplane factory at Baltimore, announced plans last night to "picket the plant and call out our workers until we close It task they conceded might take "some time." EASLEY to serve on the special congressional air-crash investigating committee is its Texas member, Representative Richard Kleberg of Corpus Chrlsti. For years lie has been one of the most frequent users of commercial i air services.

He fostered the Corpus I Christ! naval air station, 'long has been familiar with technical aeronautical terms and has great confidence In the continued rapid expansion of aviation. When the committee was created, it first made an intensive study at the local airport of both planes and airway facilities, then went off on a tour over the country to make a first hand investigation of the surroundings where recent air crashes have occurred. "I think the committee already has acquired considerable Important data, which will lead to increased safety in flying," Mr. Kleberg said, on a quick trip back to Washington during the probe in Miami of a Florida air mishap. "The work of the committee is much bigger, much more far-reach- InK than is generally realized." He said the group was making a complete study of the entire aviation set up, including the civil aeronautics administration, the commercial airlines, the weather bureau and other government agencies affecting In any manner the flyer's safety.
