The Town Talk, Alexandria-Pineville, La. Friday. March 26, 1999 B-3 HIGH SCHOOLS Cenla teams head to NSU, Mustang Relays the gap," Jeansonne said. Pineville's Jess Lloyd (400 meters and 100- ASH brings one of the deeper teams to the field, with solid distance runners such as Dwayne Rax, T.J. Landry and Gavin Filasek complimenting sprinters such as Walter Chark and Tim Brass.

Chark posted an area-best time of 10.8 seconds in the 100-meter dash earlier this year. Bolton brings sprinters Robert Etheridge and Adrian Mitchell, who anchor the Bears' relay teams. Etheridge will also be among the favorites in the long jump and 400 meters. In addition to Bolton and ASH, Johnson singled out Bossier and Diboll as having particularly strong teams. Other top athletes competing at the Northwestern Relays include Pineville's Chris Cook (area-best 14 feet in the pole vault), Leesville's Keith Smith (area-best 49.01 in 400 meters), ASH's Shamika Thomas (100 and 200 meters), and Town Talk sports services Some of the top area teams and individual track performers will compete at the Northwestern State High School Relays and the Rapides Relays today.

Thirteen schools will compete in the Northwestern Relays at Northwestern State University, including powerful area teams such as Alexandria Senior High and Boltoa "I think it's a good field," said NSU track coach Leon Johnson. "We're pleased. There should be some really good competition." Boys teams from Airline, ASH, Benton, Bolton, Bossier, Byrd, Diboll (Texas), Leesville, Natchitoches Central, North Iberville, Pineville and Evangel will all compete at the relays. Ten schools will send girls teams ASH, Benton, Bolton, Byrd, Diboll, Leesville, NCHS, North Iberville, Pineville and Rusk. Rapides will rely on athletes such as Michael Sykes (long jump, triple jump, hurdles), Broderick Allen, Josh Shahan (mile, half-mile, two mile) and Reginald Langford.

Jeansonne said Allen will attempt the "very tough triple" of the 800, 400 and 3200. He also said he may pull Shahan off the two mile and put him on the 4x400 relay team. Buckeye is led by T. J. Burlew (43-6 in shot put, 134-2 in discus) and John Ryland (11-6 in pole vault).

On the girls side, Buckeye will be favored, Jeansonne said, but Rapides may not be too far behind. Rapides is led by Courtney Ray (area-best 2:39.23 in 800), Adrienne Baxter (12.89 in 100, 27.41 in 200) and Sheritha Simmons (32-2 in triple jump, 15-5 in long jump). meter hurdles). The field events will start at 2:45 p.m. and the running events will begin at 3 p.m.

"It looks like the weather is going to cooperate," Johnson said. "That's the best thing." Mustang Relays Eight of the smaller schools in the area -Rapides, Hicks, Buckeye, Northwood, Jena, Grace Christian, Oak Hill and Glenmora will head to Rapides, where field events start at 3 p.m. and running events begin an hour later. The Rapides and Buckeye boys should battle for first, Rapides coach Harold Jeansonne said. Rapides beat Buckeye by 20 points at the Buckeye Relays last week.

Viergutz Staff reporter There wasn't a lotto ticket in sight, but that didn't stop Pineville and Alexandria Senior High from playing a little powerball Thursday night. The two teams combined for six home runs in the first three innings, but it was ASH that was able to come out with a 16-10 victory over Pineville in District 3-4A action. The game was originally scheduled to be played on the Rebels' home field Thursday "The difference was like I told our kids -(Boniol) had a few more gorillas on his side than what we had," said Pineville coach Steve Rachal. "They just literally crushed the ball. But, at times, we hit the dadgum ball hard, and that's the main thing that I was looking for.

"I wanted to see if we could come over here, put the ball in motion, and hit the ball hard. We were able to do that." What the Rebels weren't able to do is play sound defense. Pineville committed seven errors, including three in it afternoon, but rainy conditions caused officials to move the game to ASH in the evening. "Those were just throwing errors and that's something we're going to have to do a better job of," said Rachal. "We had been doing a good job of that up until that one damn inning." ASH, which had three errors, continued to hit the ball, getting RBI singles each from Gatlin and just literally crushed the ball.

The Trojans overcame an early deficit after Pineville's Brent Peart put the Rebels on top with a two-run homer in the top of the first. Clint Welch belted a two-run homer and Jonathan Guillot a solo home run in the first for ASH.

Jeremy Moreau chipped in with a two-run triple and Adam Gatlin blasted a two-run homer in the second to put ASH in command 8-2. Pineville answered with another two-run homer by Peart in the third, a laser shot, and later got run-scoring doubles from Chase and Trey Crump to pull within 8-6. A solo homer by Derrick Husser in the bottom of the third gave the Trojans a three-run lead. Guillot in the fifth to lead 15-7. But Pineville didn't fold.

The Rebels loaded the bases twice in the seventh, but only scored two runs, one on a single by Shane Jones. ASH reliever Chris Herron ended the threat by getting Adam Howington to ground out to short for the third out. ASH starting pitcher Jason Hickox picked up the win and improved to 3-1. "Pineville scared the devil out of us tonight," said Boniol. "They scare you anyway because they hit the ball so well.

I mean, Peart's two home runs were bombs. "But I thought Hickox did a good job. I don't know if we didn't put the ball in the right places or what? They hurt us where we were trying to pitch them. Marksville 8, Bunkie 2 Lovie Lachney continued from B-l Hitting grand slams can do the trick, but that wasn't Ingles' intention when he approached the plate Monday against Jena with the bases juiced. "I got two strikes on me, so I choked up on the bat and just tried to meet the ball," said Ingles.

"I made contact and the ball went out It wasn't anything I planned." Hitting a home run is rarely something planned, said Ingles. "You just have to get in there and make up your mind that you're going to hit the ball and be ready," said Ingles. Seward said any time Ingles can make contact in his sweet spot a pitch on the inside part of the plate mid-thigh to belt-high, the ball will fly out of almost any ballpark. "If you get the ball up to where Ryan can handle it he hits it a long way," said Seward. "He has the ability to really crush the baseball The kids ahead of him are getting on base and giving him those opportunities.

"And the kids behind have started to hit the ball well, too. People have stopped pitching around him, which they did earlier in the year. Now they have to throw to him, and when they do, he can cause you a lot of problems." Ingles isn't sure why he can hit a baseball so efficiently. "It just comes natural I guess," said Ingles. "Hitting has always been my thing.

I don't look for any particular pitch, I just try to make contact" Ingles, who plays second base, hopes to hit over .600 this season. In 12 games, he has already accomplished his goal of increasing his RBI and home run production. "We feel like he's on track to play baseball or football on the next level," said Seward. "He has to improve his arm strength and will have to make a position change in college. "But Ryan is real sharp, he's a 4.0 (GPA) student so his chances of playing on the next level are there if he wants to."
