vanities, says the Preacher, vanity vanities: All is vanity." if'- By GEORGE W. CORNELL NEW YORK (AP) A new, widely awaited version of the complete Bible in conversational English was published Wednesday after 10 years' work. It's called the "Good News Bible" and combines a fresh translation of the Old Testament with the New Testament, which had been rendered earlier in similar style with record-breaking success. THE FINISHED book seeks to put the Scriptures "in the natural, modern English of everyday conversation," says the American Bible Society, which carried out the project. Here are some samples from the new translation, subtitled "Today's English Version," compared with passages from the currently most broadly used "Revised Standard RSV Genesis "In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.

The earth was without form and void, and darkness was upon the face of the waters." TEV "In the beginning, when God created the universe, the earth was formless and desolate. The raging ocean that covered everything was engulfed in total darkness, and the power of God was moving over the water." RSV Exodus "You shall not pervert the justice due to your poor in his suit. Keep far from a false charge, and do not slay the innocent and righteous, for I will not acquit the wicked." TEV "Do not deny justice to a poor man when he appears in court. Do not make false accusations, and do not put an innocent person to death, for I will condemn anyone who does such an evil thing." RSV Ecclesiastes 1:2: "Vanity of Church-state question Advent Pageants, cantatas and other Christmas music will be featured Sunday in many local churches as worshipers mark the second Sunday of Advent. Additional observances also are planned by churches and other religious organizations during the week.

A number of them are listed here. First Presbyterian "Angels From the Realms of Glory," a pageant with a cast of 75, will be presented at 6:45 p.m. Sunday at First Presbyterian Church, W. Ottawa at N. Chestnut.

Major roles in the Angelic Host will be played by Ceci Stauffer as Archangel Shekinah, David Phillips as Archangel Gabriel, and Burt Bockes as Archangel Raphael. Other events of the festival will include decoration of the church by Church School families at 4 p.m., and a carry-in dinner at 6 p.m., served by the Fifty Fifty Club of the church, under direction of Mr.

Harrison, East Lansing, directed by Paul Benningfield, of the Michigan State University faculty. The program will include carols and Christmas anthems by J. S. Bach, Lotti, Vaughan Williams, and Sowerby. TEV "It is useless, useless, said the Philosopher.

Life is useless, all is useless." THE NEW translation, one of several that have come out in recent times reflecting increased knowledge of Biblical history and languages, is not intended i to replace standard English versions. Rather, it 'is meant to attract new readers and to reach those "who find the standard versions too difficult to read and understand," the society says. In that objective, the society's previously published New Testament version, sometimes called "Good News for Modern Man," has become a top bestseller, its circulation totaling more than 50 million since it first came out in 1966. THE REV. Dr.

Robert G. Bratcher, a society researcher who translated the New Testament, headed a team of seven translators who turned out the Old Testament, with reviewing assistance from numerous scholars. The new translation, made from the ancient Hebrew texts, is called a "dynamic-equivalent" rendering. That means the effort was not to reproduce the text "word-for-word" in English, but rather to reproduce it "meaning-for-meaning." It aims in each passage "for the closest, natural equivalent in modem English that expresses the same meaning" as conveyed in the original context of language and culture, the society says. TECHNICAL DATA like measurements are put in modern terminology, as in the dimension of Noah's ark, given in "feet" instead of the usual but now obscure "cubits." The hardcover edition of the new Bible sells for $2.50 and the softcover for $1.90.

(AP) -Two elementary teachers here have been told not to wear "I Found It" buttons to school because the button could violate laws prohibiting religion in public schools.

"I Found It" buttons and bumper stickers are to attest to a person's belief in the rebirth of Jesus Christ. "IT IS a legal question," said Jean Sanzone, principal at Maximo Elementary School. "I feel if the buttons are worn in the school building and a child asks what they mean, it would be bringing religion into the schools," she said. "That's against the law."
