2A THE TIMES HERALD PORT HURON. MICH. Monday Augutt 3, 1987 Mt. Clemens, Marshall teachers go on strike Schools. Continued from Page 1A teachers got a 21.75-percent increase over three years.

Richmond teachers seek a similar raise, White said. Police Courts Compiled by John F. Brown and James Donahue Westland woman injured in Sanilac crash ELK TOWNSHIP A Westland Sandusky, before being trans- Classes for 193,000 Detroit students were scheduled to begin By GEOFFREY HAYNES Associated Press Reporter Mount Clemens teachers set up picket lines this morning, joining striking counterparts in Marshall, a Michigan Education Association spokeswoman said. Detroit teachers were to meet later today to hear the results of weekend bargaining and to decide whether to strike the state's largest school district. No new bargaining was sched- uled in Mount Clemens or Mar- shall, MEA spokeswoman Jacqui Johnson said.

Mount Clemens has 221 teachers while Marshall, near Battle Creek, has 134. A tentative agreement was reached early today in Lake Orion, ensuring that classes for 5,703 students in the Oakland County district would begin as scheduled, Johnson said. Agree- ments were reached over the weekend in at least 10 other dis- tricts, the MEA said. Detroit's 11,500 teachers were to meet at 1 p.m. today and decide whether to report for work.

But John Elliott, president of the De- troit Federation of Teachers, said weekend talks had made little progress. The union has sought pay raises of approximately 6.5 percent a year in a two- or three-year Con- tract, an amount in line with in- creases won by teachers in sub- urban Detroit districts, Rollie Hopgood, a spokesman for the Michigan Federation Teachers, .0, District official, citing a $27 million deficit, have said they cannot afford raises for DFT members. believe the district can afford to pay teachers more than its last offer and does not want to grant a pay increase that could lead to staff and program cuts next year. East China: Teachers in the East China school district reported for their third day of classes without a contract today. The Board of Education has requested the help of a state mediator in contract talks.

Talks with a mediator have not yet been scheduled. Bargaining stopped last Tuesday. Unresolved issues include salaries, class sizes and early retirement About two-thirds of teachers who attended a meeting last week voted to authorize their negotiating team to call a strike, said Mary Ann Zimmerman, Michigan Education Association representative. However, that vote was not valid because 59 of the district's 250 teachers were absent and those who voted did not represent enough of the union's membership. The board already has voted to seek a St.

Clair County Circuit Court injunction to force teachers back to work if they strike. Port Huron: The Port Huron Area School District Board of Education was expected to ratify a tentative four-year contract with teachers at a meeting this afternoon. Teachers ratified the agreement last Tuesday. It calls for a 25.75-percent increase over four years, including the 1986-87 school year. The district still has to negotiate contracts with cooks, bus drivers, secretaries and classroom aides.

The groups have been working without contracts since last summer. All of those groups except classroom aides are in mediation. Tuesday, in addition to Lake Orion, settlements were reached over the weekend in Atherton, Durand, iron Mountain, Kelloggsville, New Haven, New Lothrop, Ovid-Elsie, Swartz Creek and Traverse City, the MEA said. No other strikes by MEA- affiliated teachers were antici- pated today, Johnson said. Strikes are possible this week ii the Cassopolis, Mount Owosso, Escanaba, Gladstone, North Dickinson, Rapid River; Hart and Marquette districts; MEA spokeswoman Katie Keatts; said.

Lyons Editorial Page Editor The union seeks to reduce class sizes from an upper limit of 214 students per day to between 170 and 190 per day, White said. Richmond teachers teach six classes a day, while teachers in many other districts teach only five. White said. White said the district also has proposed rollbacks in teacher rights. The district seeks to remove a contract provision called just cause for discipline, which means a teacher cannot be disciplined without specific evidence.

The district would not discuss any of its contract proposals. Deckerville: A new mediation session is planned today to try to end a strike that began Aug. 21. Superintendent Ozzie Parks said state mediator Richard Terrapin agreed to reopen contract talks late this afternoon. Karen Fritz, spokesman for the Deckerville Education Association, said the union bargaining team would agree to the meeting.

"We are all hopeful this session will be productive so we can return to the classrooms," Fritz said. Contract talks between the district and its 49 teachers broke down Aug. 19. The union requests a two-year contract with raises totaling 11 percent over that period. Teachers also are asking for long-term disability benefits.

Teachers last week rejected a board offer of a 9 percent pay raise over two years, plus a long-term disability package. Parks said the board does not Arrangements by the Steuernol-Axford-McLaren Funeral Home, Roscommon, are incomplete. John F. Nemes FAIR HAVEN John F. Nemes, 65, died Saturday, Aug.
