DETROIT The centraliza tion of the General Motors Corp a tied at least partly to an effort to make the company more difficult to break up in antitrust actions according to Automo-' Jve News a trade publication There is no question that the centralizing of General Motors under way and is being pushed by its president Edward i Cole The change in management direction is particularly noteworthy because the auto maker grew to be the largest mamifac-urer in the world under a system of decentralized operatii divisions and the manag'eme theories were created by Alfred Sloan Jr who led GM as (resident or chairman from 1923 tolSSC labor force growing constantly with population growth By mid-1972 there will probably be another 13 mil-ion additional Vietnam veterans other young people and women looking for work So there would have to be many more jobs just to keep unemployment from going higher output per is rising at a rate jreater than 4 per cent a year few and better equipment and he constantly rising skills of the labor force normally bring ains in the year ahead the aster recovery the President's program should bring will probably mean still greater efficiency as the same rent office and other overhead costs are spread over more units of output Rising productivity though means a given number of workers can turn out more output In effect then you need more jobs just to keep the impact of productivity from reducing the number of jobs You might need another I million jobs to keep the work force from shrinking Aaether Faeter II All AW Toppar TorlnCorp 40 Total Fat NA la its car divisions At one time these five divisions controlled the design manufacture and sales of their vehicles within guidelines set by the central General Motors organization Now said Automotive News in an article in its latest Issue these divisions appear to be turning into mere sales organizations with manufacturing and design functions gradually being stripped from them For years competitors the Ford Motor Co and the Chrysler Corp tried to imitate the GM divisional pattern but both gave up finally setting up product design engineering and manufacturing units distinct from the car divisions which became sales and service organizations Now General Motors appears to be creating an organization more like Its competitors Sloan in his book Years With General called the GM organization: happy medium fit industrial organization between the extremes of pure centralization and pure The General Motors Corp had no comment on the Automotive News story or on questions about the centralizing process within the concern The article noted that the Chevrolet Division of GM as of )ct 1 will be out of the car-Hiilding business turning its ast car assembly plants over to the GM Assembly Division This will give the assembly division control of 18 of 24 GM assembly plants and more are expected to follow AB AW 3 4 731 4 73 731 own explanation for the drive to centralize opera I
