FROM STAFF REPORTS Deer season for youth hunters 15 years ofage or younger begins Saturday, across Mississippi. Youth get the first chance with firearms at the state's exceptional deer herd. Youth may use any modern firearm andmay harvest one buck withhardened antlers and onedoeperday, not to exceed three bucks and five does the entire deer season. Thespread and main beam antler criteria do not apply to youth hunters. Initialreports from archery hunters through- outthestate suggest deer are actively feeding on both acorns and food plots.

According to William T. McKin- ley, MDWFP Deer Program Biologist, the 2012-13 deer seasonhasalready shown promise, with numerous qualitybucksharvested acrossthe state during the archery season. MDWFP reminds hunters that beginning Saturday, all hunters, including archery hunters, are required to wear hunter orange unless they are inside a fully enclosed stand. Deer hunters should have thefollowing: hunter education certification, hunter orange, a full-body harness for treestands, an emergency signal device such as a whis- tleorcellphoneandahunt- ingplan that includes notify- ingsomeone where you are going hunting.
