SEPTEMBER 21. 1941 BEING RUSHED ON AIR BASE, CITY PORT AIR CORPS MAY USE CITY PORT AS AUXILIARY FIELD Airport Being Constructed According to Cov( ment Plans While some 3400 workers are rushing the army air Base near Metcalte to completion, concrete pouring on the north-south runway of the Greenville Municipal airport will begin next week if materials arrive. The i'irst work unit of the new lield, located 4.5 miles from the city hall oil U. S-82, is expected to be completed by October 15.

This includes the grading of four runways, paving of the north' south runway and the warming- up apron, and surfacing outside of the runway area. It was learned yesterday that the War Department desires to utilize the municipal field as a sub-base for the expansion of the present training program from the air base proper. II the proposition is approved by the city council Tuesday afternoon (special meeting) it has been estimated that approximately 50 planes will be stationed there.
