ABRAHAM. Houston was thrown iuto a fuver-hoat of eac- citmuent about 1 oVJtJClc to-day, when tho rumor became current that Dr. J. S. Aforaha.ua bad been shot nnd mortally wounded by a ne- gro named Cylus Clarke.

Last uicht about 7 o'clock Dr. Abraham shot at Clarke, but failed in his aim. This morning Clarke swore out an affidavit against Dr. Abraham, charging him -with assault to murder. The doctor appeared before Anders and waived examination to appear before tho Criminal Court.

It was only a few hours after this that ha shot by Clarke. The cause of the shooting last Digit was, to Abraham's statement, that the negro Clark, who is at Mr. residence, which reporter. Ho got oft' the car he saw the negro Clarlffr'walkiug iu.front.of iu the same direction.uud he accosted him, saying that he presumed -ho was there. for there purpose of renS.winK the difficulty.

With this the nogro turned, racing -him, saying: Yi-s, a hero purpose; and saying this h'e drew his.pistol una cotuuiouced flwng. Deputy Glass imiuadiately, took him to jail. Tho news of tho shootink-Jwas telephoned to Rutherford by. Gris-.

more, the cgoht of the International and Great is a.neighbor of Dr. Abraham, nnd arrived at'tho shooting imme- diiiteiv after Its occurren'co and assisted the wounded man home. Several physicians and number of friends gatherod at Dr. Abraham's. When TirEiXtyEWS reporter ur- rivoti there, aboiit two' fcours after the shooting, the wounded mau sefefced very cheerful, considering the fatal natitrb of his and talked freely in'maldng the- above statement.

The wound in tbe left arnvfi'actured tho bone just above the wrist, and other ball entered the right side, the abdomen above the naval aud coming out on the left. This wound will in "411 probability prove fatal from the natatp of it. Dr. Abraham's left wrist was dislocated in the scuffle. The greatest danger to bo apprehended is from peritonitis, which 'may sot in at any moment.

All during the afternoon, large crowds were congregated in front of Rutherford Abraham's otHoo at the corner Preston aud Fannin streets, 'gossiping overVthe occurrence. A special guard has beon. placed at tho jail and to-day admission to the. jail was. denied all except to a few newspaper men who were admitted for the purpose tof interviewing tho prisoner.

Tour correspondent was among the chosen few and he elicited'tho following state-' ment from Clarke. He said: I shot Dr. Abraham in self-defense. He had quarreled with me several times last As- I was coming from innrket'One evening I met a little girl on sidewalk, near Ml'. Sherwood's place, and as'sho "would not give me any of the sidewalk.

I pushed her off;" Dr. Abraham was there and said if I did not quit that he would, kick me'off the walk, and he got his pistol. I told Mr. Shorwocd about this and he told me to go and attend to my bussness. Last week Mr.

Sherwood told me to move some manure out of the stable 7and showed me to put it, which was up near Dr. Abraham's fence. Dr. Abraham ordered me not to put it there and I told him he would have to see Mrl Sherwood about it. He said he would see Mr.

Sherwood and make mo stop too. He sent an officer to make me haul tho manure away. told the officer ho would have to see Mr. Sherwood. He said if I did not move it ho would arrest me.

Dr. Abraham had me arrested on Friday for net moving the manure, but the case was dismissed. Yesterday even- inic I sitting was. near the window in my -room abovo tho stable- 'reading a letter. The closing of the blinds in a window in One of the rpcms under Abraham's house attracted ray attention and I looked up.

I did not know who it shut tho blinds. Shortly afterwards Mrs. Abraham came down, and asked Mrs; Sherwood to make that negro keep mva.y from that windrow. I came down later and turned oat the when I went about 7 o'clock to turn them in Dr. Abraham camo 'out of his house and accused me of looking ab his wife, and shot at me.

Thismornimr.1 went downtown with young Mr. Shcrwoaa ta swear a warrant against Dr. Abraham. TUare was no trial. went to Baldwin's stable there a while, and I saw Dr.

Abraham start home. I also started home about that time, but before I got there the street car overtook ma with the doctor in it, and ho came out after me with his pistol in his hand. I startwd to run, when he fired at me. I turned and returped the fire, and after I had emptied my pistol I grappled with him and be fell. I atteniDted to take his pistol away from him, but parties interfered and ran down Congress street and Officer Glass and gave myself up to Clark seemed very much excited while making his statement, and seemed to fear mob violence.

While at Baldwin's stable, about noon, conversing with Mr. Baldwin and others, he alluded to the trouble he had had with Dr. Abraham, and said that he feared ho would be compelled to give up his place at Mr. Sherwood's on account of it County Attorney Oliver states that Mr. Sherwood, Jr came to him this and asked if Chirk could not got permission somewhere to carry a pistol to defend himself.

Dr. Abranam is doing as well to-n Jght as could be expected under the circumstances. His brother at Mobile. telegraphed to-day the facts of the shooting. Dr.

Abraham is an Alabamian, his father, Judge Abraham, having resided in Sumter county, in that State. His mother is yot living and is about eighty years of age.
