Chanukah commemorates the rededication of the Temple of Solomon in Jerusalem in the year 165 B.C. At that time Jerusalem was ruled by the oppressive Greek ruler Antiochus Epiphanes who decreed the practice of Judaism illegal. Many Jews died rather than to forsake their religion. Some recognize them as the first martyrs for freedom of conscience in recorded history. Under these conditions a Jewish national movement arose to topple the Greek colonial government. Its leader was Judah Macabee. Three years after the beginning of the uprising the Greek dominion was crushed, and the temple in Jerusalem was rededicated for religious services. Chanukah is the Hebrew word for dedication. The western wall of this temple, commonly referred to in the West as the Wailing Wall, still stands in Jerusalem. It was recently the center of attention when Jerusalem was reunited after the June war in the Middle East. Today, Jews celebrate this holiday of religious freedom by lighting candles for eight days in a special candelabra called a Menora. The first night one candle is kindled, and each night another candle is added so that the holiday is climaxed with a glowing Menorah of eight burning candles. The lights of the candles symbolize to Jews the strivings for religious freedom of all peoples. It is a joyous festival celebrated in song and dance. Recently it has become the custom for children to improvise skits around the theme of the holiday. In Blytheville this coming Friday evening, which is the beginning of the Jewish Sabbath and the fourth night of Chanukah, members of Congregation Israel Temple will celebrate the holiday with a congregational supper followed by a combined Chanukah and Sabbath service. Following the service the six classes of the religious school will present a program of songs and skits. The program is under the direction of Mrs. Jerry Cohen, Mrs. Richard Falkoff and Mrs. George Fisher. Local children participating are: Shelly Bass, Marcie Cohen, Glenn Fisher, Mark Falkoff, Laurie Bass, Jamie Cohen and Ricky Bass. Other children participating are from northeast Arkansas and southeast Missouri. TOM LITTLE REALTY COMPANY Sales - Rentals Residential - Commercial 120 N.
