publican Headlee appeared at the latest in their series of debates. This time it was before about 2,600 persons in Cobo Hall. Blanchard claimed before a Detroit Economic Club audience that Headlee's television spots and campaign literature were distorting his record in Congress. In particular, he said he was upset that Headlee literature said he favored a 22 percent state income tax increase that "We thought it was only fair to only list that (law school degree) because we didn't want to imply he (Blanchard) was a professional student," Headlee cracked. Headlee obviously enjoyed having incumbent Gov.

William G. Milliken sitting at his side during the debate. Milliken, who is retiring after a record 14 years in office, has only given the 52-year-old Headlee lukewarm support. As Milliken was leaving the hall, reporters pressed him on whether he would come out with a stronger endorsement for Headlee. "Do you plan to vote for Dick Headlee?" one reporter asked.

"What do you think?" Milliken replied. "Do you?" the reporter insisted. "I think the answer is obvious, isn't it?" Milliken said as he climbed into his state limousine. former governers were also seated at the table: Republican George Romney, who preceded Milliken, and Democrat G. Mennen Williams, now a state supreme court justice.

Headlee was asked about what he and talked about while seated at the head he only said, "Things went well." the debate Headlee trotted out two of his during a press conference to show that wasn't as far behind as the 11 percent to 23 shown in some published polls.
