4-D Sept. 10, 1978 THE SHREVEPORT TIMES 'Northeast nips Nicholls on field THIBODAUX-Northeast Louisiana's ball-hawking defense lived up to expectations, forcing eight turnovers Saturday night as the Indians stopped Nicholls State 3-0 in a season opener for both clubs. Freshman Bill Weimer provided the onlyjxwflts on a 32-yard field goal late In the first quarter as NLU stopped repeated Nicholls threats. Junior linebacker Harold Thomp. son led the way for NLU by intercepting two passes, recovering one fumble and causing another.

The shutout was NLU's first since a 37-0 blanking of Nicholls in 1973 and was the third time the Indians held the Colonels without a touchdown. NLU beat Nicholls 19-2 last year in Monroe, stopping the Colonels six times inside the IS. Nicholls didn't get inside the 15 that many times this year but they did reach the 12 on one occasion-before Thompson lnterceptel a pass and later were stopped at the one when the stubby linebacker from Monroe came up with a fumble recovery. Offensively, the Indians didn't set the world on fire but they were good as they had to be. Speedy tailback Robert Johnson ran for 116 yards and fullback Greg Schaff gained 56 as Northeast picked up 245 yards on the ground and controlled the ball for much of the game.

But the Indians were stymied by turnovers themselves, losing four fumbles and one suffering one interception. NLU drove to the eight in the first quarter but Weimer missed on a 25 yard field goal. Two plays later, Thompson presented the Indians with another oppurtunity, intercepting a pass and returning to the two. After an incomplete passJohnson ran to the 14 before Schaff lost back to the 15. Weimer came In and kicked the point that made the difference with 1:30 left in the first quarter.

Nicholls' biggest threat came in the second period when the Colonels recovered a fumble on the NLU seven and moved to the one before Thompson recovered a fumble. Thompson was in on a total of seven tackles while Roy Binion was In on 12. Warren Simmons and Steve Isaac were in on eight apiece. Isaac intercepted a pass while Simmons, Binion and Shreveporttr Vic Minor each recovered a fumble. Kirby Arceneaux completed seven of 19 passes for 69 yards and was the victim of several dropped throw.

Fullback Lewis Henry had 64 yards for Nicholls. LEADERS-NLU: Kirbv Arcenau 17-7-1 tor 69. Nicholls: Tim Bailey 13-2-2 lor 21), Tom Case 4-1-2 tor 16. RECEIVING NLU: John Flovd3-39, Tonv Morrison 2-17. Robert Johnson 2-13.

0 A 40,091 By United Press International As quickly as the Pittsburgh Pirates surged toward Philadelphia, the Phillies have surged back into a comfortable four-game lead atop the National League East. Good coverage of Alcorn receivers enabled the Tigers to hold and take over on downs at the 15, but they weren't so lucky moments later when Roynell Young picked off a Michael Williams pass and ran it back to the Tigers' 17. SB-JCruz 2, PITTSBURGH NEW YORK ab bi ab bi ab bf ab bi (Continued from Page 1-D) for most of the half, hit Campbell on three straight crossing patterns, nailing the big tight end in the end zone for a 13-yard gain to complete the 56-yard touchdown surge with 4:03 left in the second period. Moments later safety Kerry Parker's interception of a Green pass on the Alcorn 45 and his run-back to the 25 set up another tally by the G-Men. A pass interference call gave Grambling a first and goal at the two and Hall smashed across in two carries. The second Scrubbs conversion kick gave Grambling a i4-0 lead.

Alcorn's biggest threat in the first half came early in the second stanza following Leslie Frazier's interception of an Ambers pass. The Braves drove from the Tiger 38 to a first and goal at the eight, but Eugene Hall broke through to smear Green for a loss of six to the 11 and on the next play the visitors drew a 15-yard penalty back to the 29. The drive ended when RosaJes missed on a 45-yard field goal attempt Alcorn outgained the Tigers, 137 -88, in the first half, but consistently poor performance on punts helped keep the Braves out of the end zone and allowed Grambling to maintain good field position. Grambling upped its advantage to 21-0 early in the second half on James Williams' brilliant 61-yard punt return. The fleet kick return specialist was aided by several vicious blocks as he picked his way down the right sidelines.

I feel I can call him by his first name because he and I went back a long way to the early '50s was a big man although small in stature and he was a darned good football coach who came up from Jena to handle Bossier High's Bearkats from 1954-64. Two stories about Maxwell'1 coaching tenure at Bossier High come quickly to mind, and I'm sure Bill wouldn't mind if I passed them Jackson St 35, Tennessee SI 24 Jacksonville St 24, Alabama AIM 23 St Thomas 1, St Cloud St. 8 Simpson 35, St Ambrose James Madison 49. Wash Lee 0 couldn't tackle, couldn't come off the drillfield without tripping over the chalk marks. Why, I had to ask Bill, wasn't this very large lad cut from the squad? Sure, he looked impressive physically but he lacked for lateral movement.

"Well," said Bill, "when we make road trips he's gonna be the first one off the bus. Wait '11 the boys on that other team get a look at him. We'll have them beat before the opening Bill never did explain, however, what he'd do If the said youngster fell down the steps getting off the bus. The second story goes back to one of the early Lions' Club Jamborees. The Bearkats were struggling on the field and a fan just outside the press-box was having a field day himself.

"Why don't you quit, Maxwell?" he'd bellow. "We need a new coach. The fan's neighbor nudged his companion. "Hey, that's not Maxwell," he whispered. "Maxwell quit.

We got a new coach, Billy Hudson." The fan didn't miss a beat. "Bring oack Maxwell," he roared. "We want Maxwell." Bill used to laugh when he told that story about himself. I said I could remember two stories. There was a third.

The year before, in the same jamboree, I stood on the sideline and watched as Bill his quarterback stockpile depleted by injuries lectured a fuzzy-cheeked 10th grader and sent him out on the field. The rookie quarterback, his too-large helmet banging up and down on the bridge of his nose, and clutching his oversized pants with both hands, charged into battle with much enthusiasm but precious little experience. I I told you that Bill Maxwell was a il darned good coach. Among the players he develojied at Jena were all-staters Raymond Manchester and Neal Thompson. His 11-year re- cord at Bossier was 71-43-7, and only twice did his teams' records fall below .500. In 1955 his 'Kats were 9-3-1, they were 8-2-1 in 1958 and won 17 of 22 games in the two seasons of 1961-62.

i The record alone tells much about Bill Maxwell. What it doesn't show is his low-key manner, his compassion I for people, an ability to laugh. After hanging up his coaching portfolio, he I was principal for a time at Curtis Park Elementary. Funeral services will be held at 3:30 Monday at First Methodist Church in Bossier City.
