Kennedy's assassination. The answers so far point to a lone assassin.

With a major portion of the scientific evidence in hand, the House assassinations committee seems headed toward an endorsement of the major finding of the Warren Commission: there was no conspiracy. Rep. Louis F. Stokes, D-Ohio, the committee's chairman, insists that members will reach no final judgment until all the evidence is in. But the bulk of the testimony in last week's hearings supported the Warren Commission's major findings.

Some witnesses pointed out, however, that the commission probe 14 years ago was less than thorough, and some committee members showed with their questions that they cannot yet accept certain aspects of the official findings. A Stetson hat, for instance, frankly bothers Rep. Harold Sawyer, R-Mich. Time and again, he has asked how on earth John B. Connally could have held on to that hat after his wrist was supposedly shattered by a bullet.

Scientists say Connally could have, but they can't prove to a mathematical certainty that he actually did. Like his committee colleagues, Sawyer is trained in law and politics, not physics, chemistry and anatomy. All have displayed the wrinkled brows of confusion as they tried to absorb the complex scientific evidence presented during the opening week of hearings. At sea with such subjects as neutron activation analyses and drag force formulas, comittee members fall back on "common sense" to interpret the meaning beneath the murky language. And that, suggested Rep.

Richardson Preyer, is a pitfall to be avoided. As scientists testified that a single bullet could have passed through Kennedy's neck and then struck Connally, Preyer remarked that "common sense tells us that no bullet can do anything like that. Yet common sense tells us the world is flat, and we know the world is round. This evidence impresses upon us the limits of common sense." Throughout the years since Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas on Nov. 22, 1963, the "common sense" of laymen has failed to settle the very real questions surrounding the commission's conclusion that Lee Harvey Oswald was the lone assassin.

With Oswald murdered himself and with several other key figures in the case now dead, the committee is relying heavily on new tests in four scientific areas. Pathology and ballistics findings were presented last week. Acoustics and photoanalysis results will be offered Monday and Tuesday. I The key aspects of the studies described last week focus on "the single-bullet theory" that one bullet passed through Kennedy's neck, then wounded Connally in the back, chest, wrist and thigh. The Warren Commission adopted this theory, though saying it could not prove it conclusively.

The commission identified the missile which caused those wounds as a nearly ntact bullet found on Co'nnally's 'stretcher at the hospital where he was treated. Sarcastically dubbing this the "magic bullet," skeptics say a single missile could not be so nearly whole after causing all these wounds. The scientists' answer: The bullet was fully jacketed in copper, hard and designed to stay whole upon striking flesh. The bullet struck nothing but soft flesh in Kennedy's neck. The entrance wound on Connally 's back shows that the bullet which struck him was undamaged.

Bullets are damaged when they strike bone and Connally's rib was broken but that doesn't mean the bullet went through the rib; it could have only power mileage 42500 Call 221 4414 between 8 and 5 weekdays 77 GRAN PRIX Silver, red velour interior, peering and brakes, air. $2995 Branch Bros. The commission concluded that both shots entered from the back. The scientists' conclusion: Both shots entered from the back.

The X-rays, enhanced to show details more clearly, reveal a bullet hole in the back of the skull and fragments in the pattern of a bullet entering from the back. The autopsy examined anew by nine pathologists; show skull damage in the pattern of a wound from the back. And general physiological research shows that nerves and muscles could produce a backward jerk when a bullet enters the skull, regardless of the point of entry. That, again, is the scientists' explanation buttressed with their vari-' ous tests. But as frustrating as it is to laymen, scientists talk in terms of mathematical probabilities Throughout their testimony, they said a particular situation "could have" happened.

This was "highly likely" or that was "extremely unlikely." Committee members somewhat wistfully pressed for more, a flat yes or no, something that would last for all time and erase all the The scientists would not be budged beyond what they saw as clearly established by the neat, hard lines of their numbers and charts. Mach I 351 Cleveland engine in the flesh of his thigh. That, at least, is the scientists' explanation. They buttress it with sophisticated new tests matching the bullet found on the stretcher with the fragment taken from Connally's wrist with a review of the Kennedy and Connally X-rays, enhanced through computer techniques not available 15 years ago, and with ballistics studies by independent analysts with no previous exposure to the Kennedy case. The single-bullet theory is an important facet of the conclusion that there was only one gunman.

Conspiracy theorists say that if two different bullets hit Kennedy and Connally, then there had to be two gunmen because a single assassin could not have fired both bullets in the few seconds between the two hits. But that remains to be seen. The acoustics tests due Monday may establish the time span between the shots that were fired, and that has never been done with precision. The other key aspects of last week's testimony involved the direction of the two bullets which struck Kennedy, one causing the neck wound and the other causing the fatal explosion of the skull. A famous film of the assassination, taken by spectator Abraham Zapruder, shows Kennedy jerking backward as his head explodes.

Once in a long time, out of the torrent of books pouring from the presses, a single volume trundles along on time's endless conveyor belt, eluding our notice as it passes close to hand and then vanishes unseen into the limbo of unknown treasure. Such was the case for me when, under a copyright of 1975, this book, Plantation Memo compiled by Irwin Glusker, eluded my attention. however, for my joy and delectation, it was rescued from oblivion by my neighbor, Ora Williams, who passed it along to me.

I want to share with you some of the thoughts about this book which I transpose directly from its dust jacket: "Always the South comes to us in images. The word images of its celebrated writers. And the visual recollections of our own lives. If we could but find the right words and uncover the exact photographs, we could save out of the past the people, the places, the events, the sense of time and family that is the heritage of the South. "Together in this book are just such words and just such photographs.

In it is your own life, and the lives of your mother and your father and of your grandmother and your grandfather. In it are the famous men and women at their heights. In it are the very good tsh, air conditioning, radio, 1 owner, miles. $6595 76 VW Rabbit umes and the not-so-good This book is not about the South. It.

is the South." In speaking of the artists of eminence whose works were employed in bringing out this book, the blurb goes on to say Morris, one of Mississippi's own sons, has written an introductory narrative that moves through the years of his youth in a small river town and follows him far into, the East to the top of his success as an editor and a writer Irwin Glusker, the original art director of 'American Heritage' and former art director of Life magazine, spent nearly three years researching these photographs of the American South. "It is impossible to say in words what you will see in these pictures, some of them so timeless and universal as to have passed from photography into an art form of their own. Most of the pictures have never before been published in any form. Some of the photographers whose works are reproduced here have known world fame: Walker Evans, Frances Johnston, Dorothea Lange, Clarence John Laughlin. Others are synonymous, their names lost to us.

All of them known and unknown have caught rare moments out of time and recorded them as sensitively as an artist with his brush: figures out of the Civil War, like ghosts; Tallulah Bankhead and her senator father; Ty Cobb; Huey Long; the poor and the very rich; families at poignant, simple moments of their lives in little town; the silhouetted figures of three field workers; the famous and the unknown bound in a common heritage. grazed it. The bullet exited Connally's chest and went on to hit his wrist. There, it clearly shattered a bone and left fragments, causing the only damage to the bullet. Then it lodged N.Y.
