He has been the head coach at Sexton High two seasons, and is the coach of the 3 'ft successful East Lansing American Legion Post 205 team. Gast Journal's 1989 All-Area Team is perhaps the best group he has seen.

"I don't think there's been a finer group of young men in the years I've followed baseball around here," said Gast, named "All-Area Coach of the Year." It sure would be nice to take this team on our summer travels," he added. "There's so much talent, but I think even more than the ability, is the fact they're great young people." CATCHER: Dan McLean, Holt. DESIGNATED HITTER: Mike Young, Sexton. COACH OF THE YEAR: Bob Gast, Sexton. Schafer Basch Ledge for the Capital Area Conference and win the school's first Class A district championship. The panel of coaches selecting the All-Area and First Teams was comprised of Gast, Pat O'Keefe of Grand Ledge, Phil Booth of Lansing Catholic Central and Frank Deak of DeWitt.

Combined, their teams posted a record of 109 wins, 23 losses and one tie. There are two repeaters on the All-Area Team Paul Davison of ALL-AREA FIRST TEAM VanDerBos Broyles Grand Ledge and Stuart Hirsch-man of Howell, both outfielders. Davison and Sexton outfielder Scott Durrett, were named co-captains of the All-Area Team. Hirschman was voted MVP in last week's Diamond Classic at Municipal Park, after his team beat Grand Ledge for the championship. The four All-Area pitchers had a combined record of 43-4, led by Pewamo-Westphalia's Bill Schafer (12-1).

Jason Broyles (10-0) of DeWitt, Chad VanDerBos (10-1) of Grand Ledge and Sexton's Steve Basch (11-2), round out the staff. 1 INFIELD: Bryan Johnson, DeWitt; Chad Janz, Grand Ledge; Danny Hadley, Waverly; Chris Hornberger, Lansing Catholic; Mario Villarreal, Lansing Catholic. Eaton Rapids and Ovid-Elsie also posted excellent records Eaton Rapids at 28-11 and Ovid- ledge: Hit .457, had 55 hits, three home runs, scored 54 times and drove in 33 runs as a leadoff batter. Named AU-CAC and All-District. MIKE MATTIS, Grand Ledge: Hit .429, had 48 hits, eight Elsie 21-10. Eaton Rapids qualified for the Class district tournament as did O-E which also tied for the Mid-Michigan League title. She scored 48 runs, hit 41 RBI and nine home runs. MANDY ATKINSON, DeWitt: Set a school record with 51 RBI, had 49 hits and a team-leading .430 batting average. She made only two errors in centerfield and had a .944 fielding percentage. HEATHER BOUCK, Grand Ledge: Had 52 hits as her team's lead off hitter, scored 60 times, drove in 35 runs and was never caught stealing in 35 attempts. She had a .906 fielding percentage in the outfield.

KERRI EATON, Okemos: A junior, she led Okemos in runs with 62, and 20 stolen bases, had 44 hits and 17 RBI with a .367 batting average. AMY ZACK, Okemos: She set an Okemos school record with 56 hits, batted .463 and drove in 30 runs. She made the All-District team for three consecutive years. Her career batting' average was .419. KIM STOUT, Webberville: Set Webberville school records with 62 hits, 54 singles, 58 stolen bases, 59 runs and a .568 batting average.

Eaton is the only junior selected. Holt's Cindy Choban, Webber- I ville's Kim Stout, St John's Jennifer Pearsall and Meshia Caswell of Laingsburg, round out the team. "The strength of the outline schools compared to the city schools shows a big difference from the past," Eastern coach Jean Clum said. "Players are coming up from the strong little league and middle school programs in the outline areas." Dan Stolz of Okemos was chosen Coach of the Year, directing the Chieftains to a school record 32 wins and its first Class A District title.

Stolz had great respect for all the players selected. "It's a very prestigious team," he said, "yet the second team has some athletes that are probably the best players their school has ever had. The second team also had many All-League picks, which just shows the high caliber of the All-Area players selected." Bupp Sworden Caswell Eaton.
