NFL 1H www.lsj.com Lansing State Journal Monday, December 17, 2007 3C American Conference Lions' latest loss has same stench SAN DIEGO Is it over yet? Is it safe to open our eyes? Unfortunately, the answer to both is no. The Lions have two more games remaining. They'll have two more opportunities to redefine the essence of complete and utter failure. One would think that a 51-14 embarrassment against an underachieving Chargers team would symbolize the worst imaginable. But then you're reminded of a disappointing fact.

These are the Lions. It can always get worse. i-clinched division; z-clinched conference that would demand accountability something that's foreign to this organization. There's nothing salvageable once you've abandoned your pride. The Lions played Sunday like a team that stopped caring, just going through the motions until another train wreck of a season reaches its merciful conclusion. Remember that 6-2 start? Cherish the memory, because it's beginning to look as though that will represent the high-water mark of the Rod Marinelli era. This was the Lions' fourth road loss by a margin of 30 or more points.

And each was nauseatingly similar in character. Again, the Lions couldn't get off to a good start offensively, operiing with successive three-and-out drives. That put immediate pressure on a defense that has steadily crumbled the past six weeks. And once the Chargers took a 17-0 first-quarter lead, the Lions abandoned any attempts at running the ball because they fell too far behind. They're not winning again, staring at a seventh straight double-digit loss season.

It's no longer about positioning for wild-card contention. It's now about positioning for another top-10 draft choice. There's ample blame for Sunday. Jon Kitna played his worst game in two years, throwing five interceptions. The Chargers easily pushed around the defensive front.

And the Lions still have this little problem with tackling in open space. But what should bother Marinelli most about this loss is the overall lack of effort. He has preached toughness and character, and the Lions displayed neither. They obviously never recovered emotionally from blowing a late lead to Dallas last week. But they're constantly getting pounded physically at the line of scrimmage.

Wasn't the defensive line Marinelli's forte? Shaun Rogers is playing on fumes. Cory Redding is still seeking his first sack. And Kalimba Edwards didn't dress for the second straight game. Rogers isn't dogging it. He's simply too fat.

His knees are eroding under the pressure of carrying more than 350 pounds. He's not getting lower-body drive he got earlier in the season, explaining why teams have found it easier controlling Rogers at the point of attack. He told WXYT radio last week that he knows he needs to lose weight, but that revelation comes a year too late. This was basically a contract season for Rogers. His salary balloons to $4 5 million in 2008 and $7.5 million in 2009.

That's when teams prefer restoiicuring the contract, pushing those back-loaded dollars to the front in a signing bonus that's easier on the salary cap. But Rogers' poor play creates an interesting decision for the Lions. Marinelli isn't happy with Rogers' performance, but he's even less thrilled with how Rogers let him down personally. Marinelli trusted Rogers' professionalism last off-season. He held him to a different standard than others, never mandating that Rogers lose a specific amount of weight Marinelli permitted Rogers to condition himself at his own pace and the decision backfired.

Does Marinelli have the stones to cut his most talented player before next season if Rogers isn't serious about losing 40 pounds? That's accountability. But it's unlikely to happen because there's a fear within the organization that Rogers would star elsewhere if given the opportunity. This is what happens when panic serves as your management philosophy. Jacksonville 29. Sproles had one carry for minus-1 yard in the first half. He carried 24 times in the second half, scoring on runs ofl and 11 yards.

His 56-yard touchdown reception from Billy Vblek was called back after tackle Shane Olivea, who recently lost his starting job, was whistled for being an ineligible receiver downfield. Tomlinson said he felt his hamstring grab on a 49-yard run just before halftime but could have played in the second half in needed. Kitna threw touchdown passes of 9 yards to Brandon Middleton and 17 to Shaun McDonald. Outside linebacker Shaun Phillips, who returned an interception 18 yards for a touchdown, said being 1-3 "was the best thing that could happen to us. We are human.

You can't go 14-2 every year. It made us work that much harder. "We're back to playing Charger football. We haven't reached the top yet. We're still just trying to chip away at the iceberg," Phillips said.

"When it goes bad for us, it goes really bad. I'm not sure why," Kitna said. Tomlinson passed Eddie George and Tiki Barber and took over 19th place on the career rushing list with 10,487 yards. His two touchdowns give him 127, moving him past Jim Brown (126) for sixth place all time. half, leading to 17 points.

Detroit had six turnovers total, leading to 27 points. Cornerback Antonio Cromartie broke a 46-year-old Chargers record with his 10th interception of the season, tops in the NFL Cromartie's 10 picks have come in the last nine games, and he's been a starter for the last six. Cromartie also recovered a fumble on a kickoff. It's a sure thing they won't be facing a team as awful as the Lions (6-8) come the first weekend of January. Detroit has lost six straight following its 6-2 start.

"We weren't as far away at 1-3 as it may have appeared," Turner said. "I didn't really have doubts that we would get things done the way we wanted to get them done." Continued From 1C on Jan. 29, 1995. Since then, it's been one-and-done three times, including last year's pratfall against New England after they went an NFL-best 14-2 under Marty Schotten-heimer. This rout was so complete that L.T.

got the second half off. Backup Michael Turner hurt a shoulder in the second quarter, which allowed Darren Sproles to run for 122 yards and two TDs. It was the first time in Chargers history that two backs rushed for more than 100 yards in the same game. It helped immensely that Detroit's Jon Kitna tied his career-high with five interceptions.
