(AP) Jack Mildren, who quarterbacked the first great Oklahoma Wishbone teams of the early 1970s, has been kicked out of the school's football record book by a freshman making his third start. Jamelle Holieway led the seventh- ranked Sooners to a 51-6 rout of Missouri by rolling up 324 yards of total offense Saturday, erasing the mark of 323 set by Mildren against Iowa State in 1971. "I've been practicing against the No. 1 defense in the nation," Holi- OKLAHOMA VS.

"That really helps me be a better quarterback." Holieway admitted he had no idea what the school record was for total "I wasn't aware of it. But when I broke it I was happy," he said. "But I'm happier for the team.

Personal goals are great, but it's the team that's important." Holieway completed 8 of 17 passes for 168 yards and rushed for 156 yards on 22 carries. In three games since first-team quarterback Troy Aikman was injured, Holieway has amassed 721 yards and the Sooners have scored 158 points. 'Huskers flatten Iowa State, 49-0 Oklahoma's freshman quarterback Jamelle Holieway (4) scoots for yardage against Missouri. "Jamelle Holieway makes Oklahoma a total football team," said Sooners coach Barry Switzer. "This is probably the best offensive scheme we've ever had.

We've got more speed and more quickness than we've ever had." Tight end Keith Jackson caught five of Holieway's passes for 133 yards and a touchdown. Holieway got the record with a 16- yard scoring pass to Keith Jackson that put Oklahoma ahead 44-6 less than two minutes into the fourth period. Holieway left the game after the score as the Sooners raised their overall record to 6-1 and their Big Eight mark to 4-0. Missouri dropped to 1-8 and 14. The Tigers had not given up 50 points since 1974.

Tim Lashar kicked field goals of 27, 28 and 38 yards for the Sooners. Holieway's 24-yard touchdown pass to Lee Morris gave Oklahoma a 17-0 lead early in the second period. Holieway sped 34 yards around right end for a touchdown and a 30-6 lead midway through the third period. Tom Whelihan kicked a 21-yard field goal for Missouri in the second period of the regionally televised game and kicked a 28-yarder in the third quarter. Lashar's 28-yarder gave Oklahoma a 3-0 lead with 11:29 left in the first period, and the Sooners erupted for 20 points in the second quarter for a 23-3 half time lead.

Jon Redd's fumble was recovered by Oklahoma's Kevin Murphy near the end of the first period and Leon Perry plunged across from the 1- yard line six plays later, giving the Sooners a 10-0 lead. Holieway's 24-yard scoring strike to Morris and Lashar's extra point made it 17-0 before the Tigers mounted their only drive of the game, going 67 yards in nine plays to set up Whelihan's 21-yard kick. But Lashar kicked one from 38 yards two minutes later and hit his 27-yarder on the final play of the first half after David Vickers intercepted a Warren Seitz pass. Holieway's quickness was apparent on his 34-yard touchdown run. The freshman started to his left, then reversed field and raced untouched down the right sideline, easily outrunning the Missouri pursuit.

Spencer Tillman sped 5 yards for Oklahoma's fourth touchdown less than a minute into the fourth period. Anthony Stafford capped the scoring with a 4-yard TD run with 8:12 remaining. LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) While Nebraska's passing game may sputter, the third-ranked Corn- huskers proved once again Saturday that there is nothing wrong with their running game in a 49-0 shutout of Iowa State. Nebraska hit only 3-of-8 passes for 35 yards but rushed for 538 yards on 83 carries.

"Nebraska did a good job on the option," said Iowa State coach Jim Criner. "We knew they were going to move (the ball). We just couldn't stop them." Coach Tom Osborne went with sophomore quarterback McCathorn Clayton, who rushed for one touchdown and passed for another, "because we thought we could run option plays against Iowa State. Clayton is a little quicker" than senior Travis Turner, who started last week's 41-3 victory over Kansas State. The Cornhuskers, now 8-1 overall and 5-0 in the Big Eight, scored on 3- yard runs by Clayton and I-back Doug DuBose, and on a 12-yard pass from Clayton to tight end Tom Banderas in the first half.

Then Nebraska exploded for three scores in the third 32-yard run by fullback Tom Rathman, a 1- yard run by No. 3 I-back Keith Jones and a 20-yard run by Von Sheppard. "After we scored a couple of touchdowns right away, I thought Iowa State seemed like they were out there just to be out there," said Rathman, who totaled 97 yards on 10 carries. DuBose rushed for 114 yards, becoming the 12th Husker to rush for 2,000 or more yards in a career. He also became the first Nebraska back to rush for 1,000 or more yards in his sophomore and junior seasons, joining Jarvis Redwine and Heisman Trophy winner Mike Rozier in gaining 1,000 or more during two seasons at Nebraska.

DuBose ended the game with 114 yards on 26 carries in just quarters to total 1,006 for the year and 2,046 yards in his two seasons. But for the third straight week, the Husker fullbacks provided more big plays than the I-backs. Rathman's 32-yard run was his third long TD in three games. Backup Ken Kaelin NEBRASKA VS. "Tom Rathman again ran well," said Osborne.

"It seemed like he was getting 6 or 7 yards every time he carried the ball." "The tradition of a number of great tailbacks at Nebraska certainly was evident today," said Criner. "Their backs broke tackles and seemed to always fall forward for those critical yards." The Cyclones, 3-6 overall and 1-4 in the Big Eight, turned the ball over three times and each time Nebraska converted them to scores. "I'm really down," said Criner, "not down because Nebraska beat us, but because of the way we played." The Huskers scored their final touchdown when Dan Thayer recovered an Iowa State fumble at the Cyclone 4-yard line and fourth-string NU quarterback Steve Taylor scored on the next play. On the other side of the ball, Nebraska's Jim Skow equaled a school record with his 39th career tackle for a loss as he sacked Cyclone quarterback Alex Espinoza late in the second quarter. Cyclone free safety Brian Reffner had 28 tackles as Nebraska averaged over 6 yards per carry.

Bulldogs end Florida's 18-game unbeaten streak College football JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) It was so much more than Vince Dooley expected. "I thought that we had a chance to win, but never did I think that we'd win by such a large margin," Dooley said Saturday after his 17th- ranked Georgia Bulldogs ended the nation's longest college football unbeaten string at 18 games with a 24-3 victory over top-ranked Florida. "I never dreamed that we would make the long plays, nor that we could hold Florida to three points," Dooley added. "All we wanted was for our defense to muiimize Florida's big-play capability.

Our defense did a superb job." Georgia's big plays came from a pair of freshmen running backs touchdown sprints of 76 and 32 yards by Keith Henderson in the first half and an 89-yard dash by Tim Worley that sealed it in the final quarter. And, although it yielded 408 yards passing to the Gators, a swarming Georgia defense never allowed Florida any offensive continuity while sacking quarterback Kerwin Bell five times and keeping him under constant pressure. Dooley figured Florida was ripe for an upset when the Gators climbed to the top of The Associated Press poll for the first time after last week's victory over then sixth-ranked Auburn. "Florida was in the difficult position of winning big last week, being ranked number one by AP and having to play a big rival the next week," Dooley said. Besides ending Florida's unbeaten streak, the Georgia victory marked the first setback for Galen Hall, now 15-1-1 since becoming the Gators coach three games into the 1984 season.

"I thought the winning streak would end some time," Hall said. "Of course, I wish that it hadn't happened today. But this was a great experience for our kids at being No. 1 in the nation and maybe, hopefully we will learn from our mistakes." Hall said he thought Georgia had played "one of its greatest games ever. The Bulldogs shut down every phase of our game plan." Georgia's defense, led by end Greg Waters, kept pressure on Bell throughout the game, and the Gators were unable to sustain lengthy drives as Jeff Dawson missed two field goals before converting from 36 yards after the Bulldogs had built a 14-0 lead.

Henderson raced 76 yards up the Georgia tailback Keith Henderson (30) outruns Florida defenders for a first-quarter touchdown. middle with 5:24 left in the opening quarter, giving Georgia a lead it never relinquished. Georgia is 7-1-1 overall and 3-1-1 in the SEC. Florida, losing in the SEC for the first time in 10 games, fell to 71-1 and 4-1. PENN STATE 31, CINCINNATI 10 At Cincinnati, junior quarterback John Shaffer threw for one touchdown and ran for another Saturday to rally No.

2-ranked Perm State over Cincinnati. Penn State, 9-0, fell behind 10-7 in the second quarter before regrouping to roll off the next 24 points and preserve its bid for the No. 1 ranking. Georgia beat No. 1 Florida, 24-3, Saturday to open the top spot.

Junior tailback D.J. Dozier anchored Penn State's power running attack with 112 yards and another touchdown against the overmatched Bearcat defense. OHIO STATE 35, NORTHWESTERN 17 At Evanston, HI, Ohio State quarterback Jim Kar- satos completed 16 of 20 passes for 275 yards and three first-half touchdowns as the No. 4 Buckeyes rolled over Northwestern at cold, wet Dyche Stadium. The victory was the fifth straight for the Buckeyes, who improved to 51 in the Big Ten Conference and 8-1 overall.

It came one week after they upset previously unbeaten and top- ranked Iowa in a driving rainstorm at home. Karsatos was 10 of 17 for 151 yards in that 22-13 game. Ohio State scored on its first three possessions, including first period strikes by Karsatos to Cris Carter and Mike Lanese, en route to a 28-0 lead by halftone. After intermission, the Buckeyes scored again, before Northwestern's offense came to life late in the game against an Ohio State defense loaded with reserves. AIR FORCE 45, ARMY the Air Force Academy, wishbone quarterback Bart Weiss ran for 114 yards and two touchdowns and fired a 64- yard pass to wide receiver Ken Carpenter for another score, powering fifth-ranked Air Force past service- academy rival Army.

With the triumph, Air Force raised its record to 10-0 and extended its winning streak to 13 in the nation. Coupled with an earlier victory over Navy, Air Force captured the Commander-in-Chief's Trophy, emblematic of football supremacy among the service academies. IOWA 59, ILLINOIS 0 At Iowa City, Iowa, Chuck Long threw four touchdown passes, including two in a 35-point first-quarter outburst, to set Big Ten Conference season and career records as sixth-ranked Iowa blitzed Illinois. Long also had a pair of touchdown passes in the second quarter as Iowa, bouncing back from a 22-13 loss to Ohio State, stormed to a 49-0 halftime lead and sent its record to 8-1 overall and 5-1 in the Big Ten. It was the most points ever scored in one half by an Iowa team and the Hawkeyes most lopsided victory over Illinois.

MIAMI 29, MARYLAND 22 At Baltimore, Greg Cox's 20-yard field goal with 8:13 remaining put Miami of Florida ahead for the first time, and Melvin Bratton added his second one-yard touchdown as the eighth- ranked Hurricanes came from behind twice to defeat Maryland. The victory was the eighth straight for Miami, which lost its season opener to top-ranked Florida. Maryland, 6-3, had a four-game winning streak snapped. Brett Perriman scored on a 74-yard punt return to launch Miami's final comeback after Rick Badanjek's 2- yard TD run and a safety had given Maryland a 22-13 lead. Cox had a 19-yard field goal attempt blocked with 12 minutes to play.

But Vinny Testaverde, who completed 22 of 35 passes for 298 yards, tossed completions of 31 and 33 yards to Willie Smith, giving Cox another chance for his go-ahead field kick. MICHIGAN 47, PURDUE 0 At Ann Arbor, quarterback Jim Harbaugh connected on three scoring passes while a stifling defense recorded its third shutout of the season Saturday as the ninth-ranked Wolverines rolled to a 47-0 Big Ten Conference football victory. Harbaugh burned the Boilermakers' secondary for 11 consecutive first-half completions, including scoring plays of 9 yards to tight end Eric Kattus, and 34 and 65 yards to freshman flanker John Kolesar as Michigan built a 28-0 halftime lead. Harbaugh finished with 12 completions in 13 attempts for 233 yards and three scores. ARKANSAS 20, BAYLOR 14 At Little Rock, Greg Thomas' first pass completion of the game went 50 yards for a fourth-quarter touchdown that lifted 12th-ranked Arkansas over No.

11 Baylor. Luther Franklin caught Thomas' toss inside the Baylor 20 and eluded a last defender inside the 10. It was only the fourth pass attempt of the game for Thomas, who had rallied the Razorbacks from a 14-0 third- quarter deficit. He shared time in the first half with Mark Calcagni and looked shaky at times. Arkansas and Baylor are 5-1 in the SWC, Texas and Texas 4-1.

Representatives from six bowl games, including the Cotton Bowl, watched the game. AUBURN 35, EAST CAROLINA Auburn, the 13th-ranked Auburn Tigers romped to a homecoming win over East Carolina. Starting Auburn tailback Bo Jackson failed to score a touchdown for only the third game this season. He gained 73 yards on 14 carries. The non-conference football win lifted Auburn to a 7-2 record, while East Carolina fell to 2-7.

Auburn is 2-2 in the Southeastern Conference. ALABAMA 14, Baton Rouge, freshman running back Gene Jelks, starting his first game for Alabama, ran for one touchdown and threw for another Saturday as the 20th-ranked Crimson Tide tied No. 15 Louisiana State. LSU missed a chance to win the game when sophomore kicker Ron Lewis missed a 24-yard field goal with five seconds remaining. Alabama has a 6-2-1 overall record and 3-1-1 in the SEC.

LSU is 5-1-1 overall and 3-1-1 in the SEC. BYU 44, UTAH STATE 0 At Logan, Utah, Robbie Bosco passed for a pair of touchdowns and Vai Sikahema dashed for two scores as 18th-ranked Brigham Young crushed Utah State. Before leaving the game late in the second period with a pinched nerve in his upper left arm, Bosco completed 14 of 19 passes for 220 yards in staking the Cougars to a 21-0 lead. The victory boosted the Cougars of the Western Athletic Conference to an 8-2 record and dropped the Aggies of the Pacific Coast Athletic Association to 2-8. TENNESSEE 17, MEMPHIA STATE 7 At Memphis, senior quarterback Daryl Dickey threw two touchdown passes as the 19th- ranked Tennessee defeated Memphis State.

Dickey completed eight of 16 passes for 128 yards, with seven completions in the first half. His only second-half completion lost three yards. The victory, before 49,617 fans at the Liberty Bowl, was the 10th in the 10-game series for the Vols. Tennessee now is 5-1-2 for the season. Journal football quiz EXAMPLE MARGIN Futility U.
