Yarema, who played the whole game Saturday, didn't realize he'd broken his hand, Vista said. He reported pain Monday and was X-rayed. Yarema completed 11 of 21 passes Saturday for 87 yards in Michigan State's 12-3 victory over the Sun Devils. In 1983, he suffered a shoulder injury in the season's third game and missed the rest of the year.

McAllister is a 6-foot-3, 186-pounder from Pompano Beach, Fla. Holba is a 6-6, 203-pounder from Lansing. Both were red-shirted as freshmen, leaving them with four years' eligibility. Meanwhile, Perles said Monday that he doesn't have any special tactics to handle the night game and Notre Dame's noisy fans. "It doesn't change our plans at all," Perles said, referring to the 7:46 p.m.

kickoff, which was moved from afternoon for television. He is not even borrowing a high school field to practice under the lights this week. Perles also knows how to keep his squad from being mtimidated by the home fans, surely still upset over the Irish's loss Saturday to Michigan. "We're in for a noisy crowd a lot of enthusiasm," he said. "The only way we can take the fans out of the game is to put points on the board" early and grab a quick lead.

The Spartans's best hope to do that lie with tailback Lorenzo White, who rushed for 174 yards against Arizona State. "If he continues to run like that and have that kind of statistics, we'll be just fine," Perles said. White said he's aiming at a season if he holds up to the workhorse task Perles has assigned him. "Sunday morning, I woke up very sore," said the soft-spoken sophomore, who carried on all but one of Michigan State's running plays. "But it was worth it as long as we got a victory." "I felt I was a marked man when I went out on the field Saturday." said two untested freshmen, Bobby McAllister and Tom Holba, will take junior Yarema's spot in practice this week, with a deci Press high school football poll, with re cords in parentheses, total points based on 15 for first place, 14 for sec sion later on which one will start.

The Wolverines came through the Notre Dame game with just one major injury a seperated shoulder suffered by wide receiver Eric Campbell while attempting to field a punt. Defensive tackle Mike Mallory, who was named the defensive champion for his work against the Irish, has been bothered by a pulled hamstring and is listed as questionable for the South Carolina game. On the plus side, however, the Wolverines will regain the services of outside linebacker Jim Scarcelli, who missed the Notre Dame game. U-M tackle is top Big 1 0 defender CHICAGO (AP) Tackle Mike Hammerstein of Michigan has been selected Big Ten Player of the Week on defense by the Associated Press for his contributions in a 20-12 triumph over Notre Dame. Hammerstein, a 6-4, 240-pound senior from Wapako-neta, Ohio, led the Wolverine defense which did not allow Notre Dame to score a touchdown.

He had 13 tackles, six solos that included four 4 for losses. He sacked quarterback Steve Beuerlein three times. "That's not very much time to get to know a club. We haven't had any deep valleys yet." But, how can a college coach just walk into the august NFL and start winning? "Easy," Rogers said. "First of all, I may have walked into a franchise that maybe has better players than people think.

Two, you assemble a good staff, and that's what I did. "The rest was easy. I don't think for a minute it's me." Rogers maintains that the basic concepts of football are the same in college and the NFL. The big difference, he says, is in the skill level of the players. What he had to do was get the Lions to believe they could be winners again, Rogers said.

"There is no way, at this level, we can look at our players and tell them they can't win," he explained. "We have enough people in this town telling them that. "I tnink there's a very fine line between a great football team and a good football team. A lot of it is mental. So, play like you have a chance to win it and a lot of things even out in a hurry.

"And, you have to play and have a good time. I don't think football is any different than any other job. If it's drudgery, you don't perform very well." It was pointed out that the Lions have relied heavily on their defense in their first two victories. Quarterback Eric Hippie, for example, has completed only 19 passes all season. Some NFL quarterbacks complete that many in the fourth quarter alone.

But here again, Rogers preferred to take a light but positive approach. "I can't think we've done anything exciting offensively but score," he said, laughing. nesota, 12; Bartield, Toronto, Fer nandei, Toronto, 9. league.
