4B THE TIMES HERALD PORT HURON, MICH. Wedneiday March 9, 1983 It's not easy to win on- PGA Tour; anymore ter than thev ever were." Jack Nicklaus tied for ninth. Hawaiian Open. The biggest winning margin on the FGA Tour this year was two shots. In seven tournaments, the total victory margin at the end of the regulation 72 holes was six shots.

Only two of the seven have not gone down to the final hole. Even that, however, is not fully indicative of the level of competition. "In Phoenix, I finished one shot back. And I was tied for fifth," Ed Sneed said. Four golfers were involved in a playoff at Phoenix.

Sneed was tied with three others. That means the players at the next position, two shots back after 72 holes, By BOB GREEN AP Golfwrlter Lee Trevino put it simply. "Tough? Man, I guess it is getting tough to win out here," the veteran golfer said. "It wasn't long ago you could look at the field for a tournament and know who you had to beat. There were only so many guys you figured could win.

Now, they all can win. "It's getting tougher all the time. Just ask Jack." Jack agreed. "The good players may not be any bet the greens are hard, more skill Is required to play the shot. And that tends to cut down the number of people in contention." The heightened level of competition has had a positive effect on the Tour.

"It's been a great start to the season," said Commissioner Deane Beman. Beman attributed the tight finishes at least partially, to the new all-exempt Tour. "Now( everyone competes on the same level with Nicklaus and (Tom) Watson. And that's the way it should be," he said. said, "but there simply are more of them." And the more good players, the tougher the competition.

Take the current PGA season, for example. In the eight western tournaments that open the PGA Tour, three ended in playoffs. Another was won by a birdie on the final hole. Even those situations, however, seemed drab and routine compared with Isao Aoki's pitch-in eagle on the 72nd hole which brought him from one shot back and made him a one-shot winner in the "You're going to see more and more of this," Sneed said. "Particularly on easier courses.

If you have soft greens and the guys can throw it right at the flag, you're going to see several people coming down to the last hole with a chance to win. "With the equipment we have now, the balls, the clubs, and with people generally getting bigger and stronger, the length of the course no longer is a factor. It doesn't matter. "The critical factor is the conditioning of the course. If the greens are soft, a lot of people are going to be In contention.

"I won't have anything to say until after the hearing Thursday," Williams said. The hearing was scheduled before Oakland Circuit Judge Robert L. Templin, who signed a temporary restraining order against the league, barring it from interfering in a contract reached Feb. 26 between WKBD and the team. Last week, USFL officials told the station it would not be allowed to broadcast the game, which will be played in Tampa against the Bandits.

DETROIT (AP) A hearing was planned for Thursday in a lawsuit filed by Detroit-area television station WKBD against the Michigan Panthers Football Club and the United States Football League. The station is suing over broadcast rights to Saturday's game at Tampa Bay.

In a suit filed Monday in Oakland County Circuit Court, the station claimed the Panthers withdrew broadcast rights because of pressure from USFL officials. The franchise is expected to be awarded to either Edward DeBartolo, owner of the Pittsburgh Penguins hockey team, or to the partnership of Gene Litman and Nelson Goldberg of Pittsburgh.

DeBartolo's son, Ed, owns the San Francisco 49ers of the National Football League, a point that may bother NFL officials. "It is my opinion that having a DeBartolo in each league doesn't give me a problem," Simmons told The Press. Dal OPEN HOURS: WITH COUPON (3 CA8H AND CARRY ONLY!
