4 (P). Tax selling, profit cashing and a little more news skepticism today halted the recovery I swing in the stock market. At the start the list acted as though It would have no trouble extending the substantial advance of the preceding two sessions offerings then became more urgent and uneven trends developed after mid-day and persisted to the close. The Associated Press average of 60 stocks finished unchanged at 39.8 It had risen 1.1 points on Tuesday and Wednesday after having failed to register a plus sign since Nov. 21.

For the third successive day volume topped the million-share mark. Transfers totaled 1,126,960 shares compared with 1,090,790 yesterday and 1,182,240 the day before. While fractional advances were well distributed at the end isolated fav orites were up 1 to 3 there were al most as many declines. Steels did nothing and rails gener any were apathetic, with the ex ception of Union Pacific which retained a half-point gain. Steels still were confronted with pig Iron and scrap shortages and Carriers had to contend with faint hopes of the roads getting freight rate increases sufficient to ease the recent big wage boost.

Oils, chemicals, mail orders, and utilities did better than other groups. Dividends and earnings statements provided aid for individual Issues. Bonds and commodities were mixed At Chicago wheat was off 1-8 to 1-2, corn down 1-4 to 1-2 and hogs steady to 10 cents lower. Cotton was up 25 to 55 cents a bale. To- day'a upward trend in cotton futures strengthened the hope that possibly another upward revision would be caused but in the event of reversal offerings of grey goods were expected.

Woolen goods activity centered chiefly In men's spring wear. The reduction in automobile production has cut ths demand for cloth In that line but knit goods ivere In fair demand. The retail movement of rayon dresses continues slow and a similar situation la noted In ladies' scarfs. I'nderwear prices In tome Instances showed a tendency to ease.
