TELEVISIONFEATURES 7D Thursday, Aug. 13, 1992 Battle Creek Enquirer Hazardous plants, animals focus of program Neighbors plus Extension group to sponsor, bingo Visitors to the Kingman Museum of Natural History this weekend will have an opportunity to learn about hazardous plants, animals, snakes and spiders that live in Michigan. Free family films also will be available, as will the monthly planetarium program. On Saturday, families are encouraged to drop by the museum anytime between 1 and 4 p.m. for a Natural History Education Action Time (N.E.A.T.) program called "Don't Touch which describes some "no-no's" in nature and teaches participants what to look out for outside this summer.

On Saturday and Sunday, the museum will show the films Backyard Birds and Curious George. These movies will be featured at 11:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. Saturday and at 2:30 and 3:30 pjn. Sunday.

Both are free of charge. This weekend also brings showings of the August planetarium program, "The Little Star That Could," a star show that makes it easy for children and adults to understand the differences between various types of stars. Show times are 1 and 3 p.m. Saturdays and 1:30 and 3 pan. Sundays.

Admission is $1. Also, take advantage of Kids' Day at Lakeview Square mall this Saturday, and be sure to visit with a Kingman Museum staff member who will be teaching students to play "Digestive Hopscotch!" Southern gospel sing slated in Charlotte CHARLOTTE The Calvary Crazy bugs, a "bands-some" rabbit and a pretty peacock tail are some of the craft activities that kids and their parents will enjoy during Binder Park Zoo's "Zooper Summer Day Camp Party," from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. The day will be sponsored by Ameritech Publishing, Inc. During the event, there will be craft stations where kids can make creative art projects and interactive games to enjoy with parents and friends.

A slide presentation ti ded "It was a Zooper Summer" will be shown in the Wildlife Education Center auditorium throughout the day featuring all of the zoo's summer day camp stars. Sing-alongs and animal presentations will complete the day. The zoo is open weekdays from 9 ajn. to 5 p.m. weekdays, from 9 a.m.

to 6 p.m. Saturdays and from 11 a.m to 6 p.m. Sundays. During August, the facility also is open Wednesday and Thursday evenings until 8 p.m. bassadors from Battle Creek and the New Melodaires from Charlotte.

The concert is free and open to the public, but a free-will offering will be taken to pay expenses. fQ Haunted Summer 0 Somewhere in Hollywood, there are lives that work smoothly. People get a TV series and sort of stay there. They make money and pretend it's work. By comparison, there's Christine Ebersole. She's managed to star in two sitcoms and to fall in love; none of it's been easy.

Ebersole's latest series, Rachel Gunn, R.N., is on the move. For now, Fox is giving it a three-week stand at 9:30 p.m. Fridays. Things have been nomadic for Gunn, which started with CBS. "It wasn't their type," Ebersole says.

"It has the Fox type of humor." That means booming stuff, aiming for laughs, not subtlety. Ebersole plays a head nurse. "She's strong, down-to-earth and practical, yet vulnerable." She also has a knack for insults, which Fox is so fond of. And CBS? It prefers shows like The Cavanaughs, which changed her life. She was semi-obscure, having spent a year on Saturday Night Live.

The Cavanaughs immersed her in Irish spirit. Ebersole is an ethnic blend, but her red hair sets a tone. Now she was working on a show that embraced the culture, with all its exuberance. She admired its producer, Bob Maloney, and married his brother. Bill, the music director.

But nothing would come easily. CBS dangled the show for three years; there were three incarnations, totaling 26 episodes. It was finally dumped. Then Bill Maloney required surgery. That's when Ebersole got to know nurses.

"Their dedication and consideration was impressive," she says. "Their pragmatism; they just got the job done. The nurses are heroes." Bill pulled through and Christine Ebersole's life is turning out fine, but not in any easy way. In the sliced-up world of contemporary TV, shows will chase after a stray mini-audience. Such efforts are fresh and interesting.

Witness Saturday: Two new Friday: Rachel Gunn, R.N., airs at 9:30 p.m. on 17, 47 and 50. Saturday: Roundhouse air at 850 p.m., Ren and Stimpy at 9 p.m., Are You Afraid of the Parte? at 9:30, Nicketodeon. shows on Nickelodeon, bracketing the move of the off-the-wall Ren and Stimpy cartoon to prime time: 8:30 p.m.: Roundhouse, sketch comedy, kid-style. It's done like a stage revue, zipping between sketches, songs and dances.

It sometimes gets to be too much. Still, the young cast is terrific and the older people in the background including former In Living Color head writer Buddy Sheffield remember to include wit. It pelts us with sights and sounds and fun. 9:30 p.m.: Are You Afraid of the Dark? The concept kids telling a different scare story each week at a campfire sounds doubtful. The execution is terrific Here is an intelligent story, beautifully filmed in Canada.
