(UPD-Qiiarterbuck Paul Lyons ran for two touchdowns Saturday night to lie a 25-year-old school record and load Louisiana State to a 28-3 Southeastern Conference victory over Mississippi State.

Lyons, a junior, raced 13 end 15 yards for touchdowns as the potent LSU offense kept mainly on the ground to subdue the stubborn Bulldogs, Quarterback Bert Jones, alternating with Lyons, scored on a two-yard run and tailback Chris Dantin added the other touchdown on a three-yard dash. Jay Michaelson was successful on all four extra point attempts. The only scoring for State came on a 23- yard field goal In the first quarter by Glen Ellis. The rugged LSU defense managed to contain the Bulldogs' new wishbone offense for the remainder of the night. The two touchdowns by Lyons lied a record set In 1946 by Y.

A. Tittle for most touch- flcwns scored and responsible for in a siriglc season. Lyons boosted his record to six touchdowns running and nine passing. LSU scored one touchdown in each quarter lo rebound from two consecutive setbacks which began two weeks ago in the same Mississippi Memorial Stadium in a loss lo Ole Miss, Dantin returned the game's opening kickoff 59 yards to the State 3(i to set up the first Tiger touchdown. Lyons and tailback Allen Shorey alternated on a four play series that moved the ball to the 13 where Lyons dashed into Ihe end zone.

A 21-yard sprinl by Dantin and a 15 yard penalty against MSU moved LSU into position for their second touchdown midway Delta State loses to Jacksonville JACKSONVILLE, Ala. (Special)-Playing without its No. 1 backfield, Delta State College was unable to generate an offense here Saturday night as Jacksonville State University defeated the Statesmen, 31-14. Regular quarterback Randall Huffman, fullback Bobby Covinglon, and tailback Hal Posey didn't make the trip and were sorely missed as Delta State got both its touchdowns from the defensive team. The outmanned Statesmen put up a gallant fight and were actually still in the ball game late in the fourth quarter, but a pass interception at the Jacksonville four closed the door.

The loss was the fourth straight for Delta State and dropped the Statesmen's record to 3-4-1, while the victory left Jacksonville at 53. Delta is now 2-4 in the Gulf South Conference and Jacksonville is 4-2. Jerry Barrett's 83-yard punt return with 7:05 remaining in the first quarter gave the Statesmen an early lead with Crawford getting the point after. The Gamecocks came back to knot the score with 6:10 left in the half when Doc Lett tossed a 16-yard scoring strike to Terry Owens. That score carried into halftime.

The Gamecocks exploded for 17 big points in the third quarter as Boyce Callahan raced 10 yards for one TD, Hassal Walls had a 43- yard punt return for a score, and Danny Kemp booted a 27-yard field goal and the two extra points. Sandwiched in between the Jacksonville scoring 'was a 100-yard kickoff return by Delta's Terry Beckham. Jacksonville's final score carne with 1:31 left in the contest when Bobby Marcum caught a 16-yard TD pass from Buddy Talley. Kemp converted. Delta State will now return home to host Samford University Saturday night on Delta Field.

Samford is 7-1, losing only to powerful Livingston University, the No. 3 NAIA team in the country. (UPI)--Pat Sullivan passed for four touchdowns, two to his favorite receiver, Terry Beasiey, and two to Dick Schmalz, in carrying the unbeaten, fifth- ranked Auburn Tigers to a 35-20 victory Saturday over previously unbeaten, sixth- ranked Georgia. Sullivan, the South's leading candidate for the Heisman trophy, threw 34 and 70 yards to Beasiey.

He hit Schmalz with 15 yard and five yard touchdowns and set up a fifth score in a tremendous one-man show. It was a 27-yard pass from Sullivan to Schmalz, which the Auburn senior threw while being dragged to the ground by two Georgia defenders, that set up the Tigers' first touchdown. That pass put Auburn at the Georgia two-yard line and two plays later Tommy Lowry plunged over from one yard out to put Auburn in the lead with 4:25 gone in the game. Sullivan hit Beasiey for the Tigers' second touchdown with 5:46 left in the first period, and Auburn, a three-point underdog, appeared on its way to a rout with a 14-0 lead. But Georgia came back on the running of sophomore quarterback Andy Johnson to tie the score early in the second period.

A 67- yard run by Johnson put the Bulldogs at the Auburn two-yard line and Jimmy Poulos ran it across with 3:50 left in the first period. Donnie Allen tied it for Georgia at 14-all 4:49 into the second period with a four-yard run before 62,891 fans, largest football tournout in state history. Alabama 31, Miami 3 TUSCALOOSA, Ala. I Fourth- ranked Alabama, stung by a first period field goal, followed scrambling quarterback Terry Davis lo a 31-3 rout of Miami (Fla.) Saturday to cement the team's chances for an Orange Bowl berth. 34, Morgan 29 JACKSON (UPD-Tnilbnck Edward Pnylon scored two touchdowns Saturday afternoon to load Jackson State lo 34-29 win over Morgan Stale of llalllmoro, Md. Sullivan quickly brought the Tigers back after the ensuing kickoff, putting them ahead 21-14 wilh 6:20 left in the half with his first touchdown pass to Schmalz. The third period was scoreless, and Georgia appeared to have lied the score again early in the final period when the Bulldogs scored on a two-yard run by Johnson after recovering a fumble at the Auburn 25 yard line. However, Rogers Mitchell broke through to block Kim Braswell's extra point try, and Auburn still led 21-20 with 11:46 left in the game. Sullivan and Schmalz quickly widened that lead to 28-20 when, on Ihe first play after the ensuing kickoff, Sullivan hit Schmalz at the Auburn 45 and the Tiger senior broke away from two Georgia defenders and raced down the sidelines to complete a 70-yard play.

A 60-yard punl return by James Owens put Auburn at the Georgia 20-yard line late in the contesl and two passes by Sullivan, the second to Schmalz, widened Ihe Tiger margin to 15 points. of the second period from the Bulldog 20. After a couple of short LSU bursts, Jones rolled around right end the final two yards for the touchdown. Ellis booted his 23-yard field goal midway of the first period when a Bulldog drive stalled at the Tiger six. The Bulldogs, switching lo Ihe wishbone offense two weeks ago, couldn't generate another scoring threat against LSU's rugged defense.

After exchanging a couple of punts, LSU launched its third quarter scoring drive wilh an 18-yard pass from Lyons lo Gerald Keiglcy and a 17-yard run thai moved Ihe ball lo Ihe Slale 24. Tailback Arthur Cantrelle picked up nine yards before Lyons broke loose for the 15-yard dash to score. The Tigers drive 90 yards for the final score, mostly on short runs. Edison and W. Alexander), Bill Lyle, superintendent of the Washington County Park Commission, announced today. Lyle said the purpose of the meetings--the B-Modified Class on Tuesday and the Hobby Car Class on Thursday--is to form rules and regulations governing the two divisions for the coming racing year. (UPD-The Mississippi Rebels, paced by sophomore quarterback Norris Weese and a fleet of strong running backs, romped to a 49-10 victory over outclassed Chattanooga Saturday and boosted their hopes for a post-season bowl bid. Weese guided the highly favored Rebels to four touchdowns before stepping aside in the third quarter for senior quarterback Chumblcr, who directed Ole Miss to three more touchdowns in the final period. Tailback Greg Ainsworth accounted for two Rebel touchdowns on runs of one and 11 yards, fullback Jimmy Porter picked up another on a one-yard plunge, Weese scored on a five-yard dash, reserve tailback Jim Winstead went two yards for a touchdown.
