The blnrk sprinted up an alley alongside tho jail and headed for Common street.

Fearing that he might hit some innocent bystander, Fitr.patrick did not fire for a moment, but when the negro darted around tho rear of tho city jail Fitzpatrick followed, and, aiming at the black's flying legs, fired twice Tho first bullet went wild, but the second hit the negro in the right leg. Tho negro hesitated for nn instant, but in spite of his wound, he kout on running as fast as his injury would permit, lie had not gone more than 60 yards, however, when he was caught by two firemen from the central station and returned to the city jail. A roply to the financial arsumonts advanced in oppoai tion to prohibition was ffiven at thr Federal Council of Churches of Chrisi here today by Rev. Cha. S. Etelile, field secretary of the council, Mr. Stehel said the averaje working man fcBrs being out of a job more he does going to hell.

The liquor interests have capitalized upon this fear and by presenting an array of figures which seem to prove that a calamity will follow the abolition of the saloon, they have coerced a large number of workingrctn to vot for its retention. "The average argument of liquor men is baaed on the absurdity thst, if thu saloonkeeper fails to get a man's money, nobody else can possibly get it. 1 lie fact is now that if money invested in liquor business were invested in American industry it would give employment to four times as many workingmen who, collectively, would receive four times as much in the form of wages and four times as much of the raw material will be required as is now the case in the liquor business. These figures are bnstd on a study of the United States census returns. Number of Workingmen Exaggerated.

"The number of workingmen employed In the liquor business has been greatly exaggerated. Only one per cent of those engaged in manufacturing industries in the United States are employed in the liquor industry; that is, 02,190 wagts earners. "Of this number less than one-fourth are brewers, malsters, distillers and rectifiers; three-fourths are employed as engineers, carpenters, machinists, bottlers and other occupations which art-cot at all peculiar to the liquor business. "The liquor men are paying a great deal of attention to the farmer. They are asking, 'What will become of tho fanner when the brewers and distillers no longer buy his grain and grapes, his apples and his One would think that nobody likes grapes, apples and cherries unless they come in the form of booze.

The fact is that the liquor interests purchase annually only about nn average of $10 worth of prod Christmas Exercises. The Christmas exercises of tho Quoensborough Methodist Sunday school will be given on Friday evening, December 22. A splendid program has been arranged for the occasion and the children who ar to take part are bauig well drilled and are making splendid progress in their pieces.
