BALTIMORE (AP) The Baltimore Orioles clinched their sixth American League East Championship in 11 years Saturday but maintained their record of never having nailed down the title on the playing field at home. The Orioles were declared winners before taking the field for a twi-night doub-leheader against the Cleveland Indians, when the second-place Milwaukee Brewers dropped a 6-3 decision to the Minnesota Twins.

Champagne was on ice, but the celebration was delayed not only by the twin bill but also by a rain delay of one hour and nineteen minutes in the first game. "We may spend the night here," said Scott McGregor, the first game starter. "We have a delayed fuse on the celebration." The Orioles were informed of Milwaukee's loss by a reporter who made a telephone call to Milwaukee and was given a personal, play-by-play of the final outs. After a few lusty cheers, the Orioles quietly prepared for the doubleheader while clubhouse attendants put their plastic coverings over the locker stalls to protect clothing from any postgame champagne party. The Orioles later lost the first game of the doubleheader to Cleveland.

7-3, as Cliff Johnson hit two home runs. The second game as rained out. California 3, Rangers 1 ANAHEIM. Calif. Chris Knapp tossed a 5-hitter to lead California to a victory over Texas which helped the Angels widen their first-place margin in the American League West to three games.
