U.S.

District Judge Robert Cleland on Friday denied a request from the Detroit Free Press that a judge in Washington decide the matter. Cleland ruled in August that there is no reporter's privilege because the matter involves a lawsuit. David Ashenfelter skipped a deposition last month. Free Press Editor Paul Anger pledged to fight the depo sition, saying that ireedom of the press and the public's right to know are at stake. "Sources will not come for ward to give the public information about the actions and possible misconduct of gov ernment ollicials if they tear retaliation," Anger said.

Former federal prosecutor Richard Convertino wants to know who in the U.S. Justice Department supplied information to the newspaper. He has sued the government, claiming his privacy rights were violated. Convertino's lawyer, Stephen Kohn, has said Justice Department employees leaked unflattering information to the Free Press in retaliation for his client's complaints to Congress about the government's anti-terrorism efforts.
