ACCIDENT hmm By BEN FELLER The Associated Press WASHINGTON President Barack Obama on Thursday interviewed federal appeals court Judge Sidney Thomas of Montana for an opening on the Supreme Court, a person familiar with the conversation told The Associated Press.

The roughly hourlong session at the White House was the first known formal interview Obama has conducted for the coming vacancy on the high court. It is not clear whether Obama has interviewed other candidates in person. Vice President Joe Biden also interviewed Thomas at the White House in a separate meeting Thursday, said the person familiar with the conversations, who spoke on condition of anonymity in order to discuss Obama's private deliberations. The White House had no comment. A message left with Thomas' chambers in Billings was not immediately returned.

The personal time Obama devoted to Thomas suggests the federal judge, well respected within legal circles but hardly a familiar name in Washington, is under a higher level of consideration by the president. The San Fraricisco-based appeals court on which he serves has a liberal reputation, but lawyers who know Thomas describe him as independent and a straight-shooter. Obama is choosing a nominee to replace Justice John Paul Stevens, who is retiring this summer. CANADIAN TRASH TRUCK CRASHES Feb. 11, 2009: Crash on Interstate 94; driver cited for careless driving.

March 2, 2009: Trash truck jackknifed and stopped in a ditch on Interstate 69 near Goodells Road; driver cited for careless driving. April 3, 2009: Trash truck crashed into a St. Clair County Road Commission truck near the Water Street overpass on I-94; a county worker was taken to the hospital with minor injuries. Nov. 19, 2009: Trash truck lost control and destroyed about 100 feet of guardrail near the Water Street overpass on I-94.

Jan. 20: Two Ontario trucks one a trash hauler crashed after losing control on icy I-94, just west of the Black River; both drivers were cited. March 17: Trash truck rear-ended a tractor trailer, shutting down part of I-94 for 6V4 hours; driver ticketed for tailgating. "We take a very stern approach on this," Donnellon said.

The speed limit in construction zones is 45 mph if workers are present and 60 mph if they are not. Trudo, the Riley Township turkey hunter, sat in his car on an overpass and watched Thursday as firefighters doused flames from the garbage truck. The cab of the truck was yellow when Trudo first saw it but was charred black in minutes. "It literally just melted," he said. He wasn't surprised a Canadian garbage truck was involved.

"It's not a good idea (to allow Canadian trash to be hauled into Michigan), but we're the ones letting them come over," he said. Contact Liz Shepard at (810) 989-6273 or lshepard gannett.com. One woman said they didn't break into the house and that they were invited in. Port Huron police Lt. Jeff Baker said officers try to step up patrols in the area where MDOT has bought homes. "Certainly any time there is a house that is vacant, there are going to be things going on," he said. "Those houses aren't watched closely because there are not neighbors around anymore." 'He's Drulia said. 'We'll know more (Friday) "The Icehawks are bringing in an emergency goal-tender, just in case Sterling is not able to go. He was shaken up in the middle of the second period Wednesday night after teammate Paul Cianfrini ran into him behind the net. The extent, or type of injury is not known, as Drulia said he didn't know if it was Sterling hitting his head on the ice or Cianfrini and Komets forward Colin Chaulk falling on him that led to the injury. "If Sterling cannot start, rookie Raffaelle D'orso will get the nod.

I wasn't very impressed with the trailer and I was too excited for 'The Dark Knight' to have any room left for other superhero movies. But, when the credits rolled, along with a ton of other people, were taken by surprise in the fact that 'Iron Man' was an amazing movie-going experience.

The film this site's filter forces me to call is nothing like Iron Man; it's a completely different movie, but what they both had in common was that they surprised the heck out of me. The garbage truck careened into the median and caught fire, leaving the cab barely recognizable. Smoke poured out of the truck for hours after the crash as firefighters from Emmett and Riley Township worked at the scene.

Truck parts were scattered across the interstate and into the median. Crews also cleaned up spilled vehicle fluid. The crash is the third this year and the seventh since January 2009 involving a Canadian garbage truck on St. Clair County interstates, according to the Times Herald's archives. In the last accident, part of Interstate 94 was dosed for 6 Vi hours after the driver of a garbage truck rear-ended a tractor trailer.

St. Clair County Sheriff Tim Donnellon said Canadian garbage trucks, which use 1-69 and 1-94 to travel to family homes and 10 multi-family homes to make way for the $583 million plaza expansion. More than 55 homes have been razed and another 15 are scheduled to be razed this spring.

Offers have been made to all but four of the 30 businesses that will be displaced by the project. Twelve of the deals are closed, Evans said. "We have many offers out there, and we are still negotiating," she said. Contact Stephen Tait at (810) 989-6275 or at stait gannett.com. rally.

You don't let a tree fall into another tree if you know what you are doing. This job was not for amateur or unskilled workers. The county made a big mistake on this one.

IN RESPONSE TO: Canadian truck driver arrested (Thursday) reduu: "Considering the no jail sentence recently given to the Canadian writer who assaulted a U.S. Customs officer I doubt this Canadian truck driver will get nothing more than a fine and his Canadian company will pay for it. Regardless of all the past problems that these trash trucks has caused, the rules for even allowing these trucks into the USA is a federal issue, so the county can do little if nothing."
