MARYSVILLE 1700 River Rd. Unit 28, downriver view, 2 bdr, 2 cor garage, boat launch, asking $80's. 313-756-6088. By MAGGIE I. JARUZEL The Associated Press FLINT Preschoolers squeal at the sight of Barney, a 6-foot-4 purple dinosaur, but few people appreciate him more than former Davison resident Kathy Parker.

Barney is the biggest craze to hit public television since Big Bird, and TV industry watchers predict the character's 1993 product revenues might hit $100 million. Ms. Parker is co-creator of the dino, so there's no doubt he's changed her life. But not as much as people might expect, she says. "We have a nice four-bedroom house, but we don't have two Mercedes-Benzes parked in the driveway," said Ms.

Parker, 39. "We're still paying off our van, and 1 drive a Ford Taurus. Our priorities are very much the same. Our lifestyle is relatively conservative, and there really isn't anything extravagant." No chef. No live-in housekeeper.

No tennis court. No likely visit from Robin Leach. But Ms. Parker's life is more hectic than when she was teaching special education in Bendle and LakeVille school districts and her husband, Phil, was teaching at Bendle through the 1970s. "Anyone that knew us before Barney knows we're the same people we were before we started this, except our routines have changed," Ms.

Parker said. "Because of time, I don't cook as much as then." They moved south in 1981 after Kathy accepted a job as product manager for early childhood special education materials at a Texas publisher. Promoting their creation The Parkers are committed to staying involved in the day-to-day aspects of promoting Barney, from choosing what color to paint the TV classroom set to continuously asking "What would Barney say in this situation or what song would he sing?" (Phil is a staff lyricist.) Their schedule has forced them to become a family of jugglers, Ms. Parker said. But family, including her parents Raymond and Dorothy 0'Rourke of Davison, still is a priority, Ms.

Parker said. Her father predicted Barney's By The Associated Press Former Davison resident Kathy Parker is co-creator of Barney the purple dinosaur, the biggest craze to hit public television since Big Bird. FOR SALE 2 3 BDR Used Homes, ready to move-in. Ask for Joy. Indian Trail North, 385-7411.

His fan club has more than 400,000 members and signs up a week. Staff at the Lyons Group, which promotes Barney, recently put a moratorium on licensing after receiving up to 200 telephone calls a day from companies hoping to win the Barney seal of approval. 'Overnight success' But Barney's "overnight success" took Ms. Parker and her creative partner, Sheryl Leach, five years to achieve. The Dallas-area friends, each with a preschooler and a master's degree in education, developed Barney after conducting several unsuccessful searches for videos for their 2-year-olds to watch.

(Ms. Leach's father-in-law owned a video production company.) Ms. Parker said their concern now is keeping Barney's big, goofy grin from being plastered character would be a smash back in 1988 when the first video cassettes were released, but he is stunned by the degree of success. "I always knew and believed she had a good thing, but I never in my wildest dreams never, ever thought it would take off like this. I didn't know how big 'big' really was until this," Raymond 0'Rourke said.

Barney Friends a daytime program with a cast that teaches children about manners, ecology, and nutrition is in its its second season of public television programming. Barney-mania is sweeping the country. Barney and his silly sidekick, Baby Bop, are on everything from balloons to bedspreads to cookies to clothes. He's made the front page of Time magazine, Newsweek, USA Today, The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, People, TV Guide. DEAR ANN LANDERS: I have another story for you about a child born late in a father's life. It's from a different perspective. Mine.

My father was 63 when I was born. As a widower, he had married my much younger mother, and in the Depression years, they debated over a new refrigerator or a baby. Love won. The active force in my childhood was my daddy. He taught me to roller-skate.

I was his companion at those unforgettable baseball games in Philadelphia's old Shibe Park. Every Sunday, he organized outings such as picnics at Valley Forge, polo matches, drives in the country and visits with relatives. As a teen-ager, involved in many activities, I knew that my dad would be present at every dance recital, band performance and athletic event in which I participated. Possessing a third-grade education, he instilled in me a passion for learning and watched with pride my graduation from high school and college. At the age of 85, he was father of the bride.

He celebrated the birth of his first and only grandchild by arriving at the hospital, age 90, with a baseball and bat to welcome the new arrival. My son was 7 when his grandfather died. The rich legacy of an older father such as mine is one to be cherished. My story is one of rare good fortune, and I needed to share it. J.M.B., Ocean City, N.J.

DEAR J.M.B.: What a beautiful letter. And how nice that you realize how lucky you were to have had such a loving father mm I REGISTER TO WIN A PAIR OF done by cigarettes. We all know by now that cigarettes are killers and people who continue to smoke are addicts. But there's another aspect of the smoker that has not been given enough visibility. They are slobs.

Just look at the entrances of our office buildings, stores, factories, parking lots, stadiums all those facilities where smoking is no longer permitted. What do you see? Cigarette butts everywhere. After a recent garden party, we spent hours collecting cigarette butts from the lawn, potted plants and flower boxes. They were everywhere, in spite of the fact that we had ashtrays out and coffee cans filled with sand. There is definitely something tacky about people who behave like this.

Or am I Crazy in California? DEAR CALIFORNIA: Not all smokers are slobs, but enough of them are to create a serious litter problem. Thanks for a new slant on an old subject.
