Bill Richert had a 566, as the totals were 2698-2559. Jack Melane's 581 was hich for won't be in the bullpen when the season opens I'll be in that rotation. I'm going to be one of those four starters." LaGrow, while not so brash ly confident, is like many other Tigers in that he sees this year as his big chance.

This is definitely an important spring for me," he said. "I have a chance to be a starter and that's something I've been waiting to do for years." He said last year when he also was one of the starters in the opening exhibition game "went out the window. I still don't know why, because I thought I was throwing pretty good." LAKELAND, Fla. (AP) The Detroit Tigers won't be showing their big names on the mound Thursday when they open their exhibition season. Instead, Manager Ralph Houk said Tuesday Lerrin LaGrow, Ed Farmer and Fred Holdsworth will pitch against Chicago at Sarasota with Wilbur Wood expected to start for the White Sox.

The three, like most of the other pitchers, are hoping to land one of the two openings for starters on the Tigers rotation. Farmer, for one, thinks he's got it made. "I've got the stuff to do it," he said. "I haven't even thought about relieving. I saved another pair, then headed south for Puerto Rico where he piled up an 8-4 record.

"That really opened my eyes as far as starting was concerned," he said. "I had never pitched that long before." He said after the seventh inning, he often challenged batters with a practice which might seem risky. But Farmer said he never lost a game after the fifth inning. "If I throw the ball down here the way I did this winter I'm going to win one of those starting jobs," he insisted. "And if I don't, then somebody else will have it because I don't deserve it." Aaron might face walks in Cincinnati By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS Even if Hank Aaron plays in Atlanta's season-opening series at Cincinnati, he may have a tough time catching Babe Ruth.

The Braves, who want Aaron to hit home runs 714 and 715 in Atlanta and thereby surpass Ruth's mark at home, have said he will not be in the starting line-up for the first three games in Cincinnati. Aaron said Monday that if he is used as a pinch hitter, he will swing for a Bowling CITY MEN'S Neil Sinclair's 624 series was tops for the night, as Sinclair led Bopra over Brass Rail 25-5 Monday night in the City Men's bowling league. Ron Grow was high for the defeated with a 586 series, as the pinfall total was 2580-2455. Bob Tray's 605 balanced the rest of the Colby squad, all under 500, to top Koepplinger 21-9. Totals were 2512-2424 in pinfall.

He won three games for the Tigers and ace, agreed with his skipper, saying he'd pitch around Aaron in a game-winning situation. "Let 'em boo me," he said. "He's gonna get the record anyway." Elsewhere, there wasn't much progress on the holdout front, although the Baltimore Orioles signed outfielders Al Bumbry, 1973 American League Rookie of the Year, and Jim Fuller and infielder Enos Cabell. General Manager Frank Cashen threatened to take action against the BLAZERS 107, LAKERS 102 Sidney Wicks sank a clutch basket with 53 seconds left to clinch the Portland victory and prevent Los Angeles from moving into first place in the Pacific Division.

Meanwhile, the New York Yankees invoked the option clause on second baseman Horace Clarke.

The Cleveland Indians, worried about the knee which Buddy Bell injured playing basketball over the winter, said the third baseman would see an orthopedic specialist in Tucson, today. Oakland second baseman Dick Green, who announced his annual retirement after the 1973 World Series, agreed to return to the world champion A's. The Boston Red Sox spent much of Tuesday denying reports from Chicago that they are trying to acquire third baseman Bill Melton from the White Sox for second baseman Doug Griffin. Larry Biittner, acquired from the Texas Rangers over the winter, impressed Montreal Manager Gene Mauch in a batting drill. "I don't know if he can beat out anybody for a regular job," Mauch said, "but I like his contact.

He doesn't miss the ball much." home run "if the situation calls for it." Tuesday, though, Manager Sparky Anderson of the Reds said he won't hesitate to walk Aaron "if the situation calls for it." All that's wanting is the situation. "I know it won't be popular, but winning comes first," Anderson said. "I'm happy any time he's not in the line-up against us. Porter, hauling in outlet passes from teammates Elvin Hayes, Wes Unseld and Mike Riordan, tied his career high with 28 points Tuesday night as Capital took a 103-89 National Basketball Association victory over the slumping Atlanta Hawks. Porter scored most of his points by beating the Hawks downcourt for layups. Elsewhere in the NBA, New York defeated Seattle 11 1-106, Chicago topped Phoenix 111-91, Portland downed Los Angeles 107-102 and Detroit edged Golden State 95-93.

In the American Basketball Association, Carolina beat Kentucky 112-96 and Denver whipped Memphis 135-101. Hayes, the league's top rebounder, hauled down 21 to go with his 21 points. Unseld, returning to action after missing two games while his knee was being examined, and Riordan had 14 rebounds each. Porter, on the receiving end of al those outlet passes, set up teammates when he wasn't scoring himself, and wound up with nine assists. Capital broke it open with 15 straight points midway through the second quarter and coasted home.

Flomes like Tarzan to Bruins By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS The Atlanta Flames have lost five more games than they've won. They've given up 36 more goals than they've scored, and they're 25 points out of first place in the National Hockey League's West Division. You wouldn't have known it from Tuesday night's game against the Boston Bruins, though. "They thought they were Tarzan," said Bep Guidolin, coach of the East Division-leading Boston Bruins victims of Atlanta's 4-1 victory. "The Flames are trying for a playoff spot, and that's the way you play.

They were playing before a big, noisy crowd, and it was probably their best game of the year." In other NHL games, the Pittsburgh Penguins edged the New York Islanders 2-1, and the Los Angeles Kings trimmed the California Seals 2-1. In the World Hockey Association, the New England Whalers topped the Chicago Cougars 3-2, and the Cleveland Crusaders downed the Los Angeles Sharks 6-3. Atlanta Coach Bernie Geoffrion, who played in front of tremendous crowds during his 16-year NHL career with the Montreal Canadiens and New York Rangers, said, "I've never seen a crowd like that, even in my days with Montreal. It gave great spirit to my team."
