The Ranger defense gave the offense group time and turnovers to get the ball into the end zone. Even the Kilgore specialty teams on kick-off and punt retunrs gave the Rangers excellent field position on Tyler soil, but the sputtering offense, whichmanged to produce 168 yards total, couldn't put the ball into the end zone. The defense allowed only Tyler three first downs in the first quarter and shut down any running lines for Ducksworth and Allen.

Although the Apaches boasted the league leading rusher and offense in the conference, their defense was the tell of the tape, deep into TJC territory, but the Rangers came up short when kicker Greg Roach's 37-yard field goal was blocked by Reggie Oaks. The the drive was highlighted by the running of freshman star Paul Butler. Butler, who finished with 80 yards on 22 carries for the night, kept the drive going with 36 yards on 10 carries. But the field trip was cut short on the 21 yard line when quarterbcak Clifton Thurmond's pass went through the hands of tight end Barron Barry at the 5-yard line on a third down play. The Rangers second chance to score came at the beginning of the second quarter.

Henderson product Calvin Neal started things off with a 23-yard punt return putting Kilgore on the Tyler 49-yard line. Butler took three hand-offs, slashing for runs of three, seven and 11 yards. Then a the big play of the drive came, a screen pass from Thurmond to fullback Bill Hooper for 13 yards, put the Rangers at the Tyler 5. That's when the Apaches defense got tough and even tougher stopping all forms of progess at the one yard line halting Kilgore's scoring drive at the one foot line. The final scoring threat by the Rangers took place in the third quarter, when Kenneth Coleman grabbed the opening kick-off of the half and rambled down the left sideline for 23 yards.

Yet, the Rangers offense dropped the wrapped gift at the Tyler 39 yard line due to fumbles and three incoplete pass plays by Thurmond.
