We expect the increases to be something over $200 million (with total fuel costs) something over $400 million." The 1974 costs have been more than double last year's, he said. Domestic fuel is about double, and international fuel cost is about 3' times last year's. A one-cent-a-gallon increase in the price of jet fuel adds $13 million to TWA's costs after taxes, he said. United Airlines, which operates almost entirely in the domestic market, paid an average of 18.6 cents a gallon in while TWA paid 41.3 cents internationally and an average of some 30 cents over its whole system. 6 53 6 45 AGE Fund Admirolty Grwt Admiralty Inc Admiralty Ins Advisers Fund Aetna Fund Aetnalncom Shr Atuture Fd All Amer Fund Allstate Stk Fd Alpha Fund AMCAP Fund AmBirthrght Tr AmDivers Inv AmEauity Fd Amer Exoress: Capital Income Investment Special Stock AmGrowth Fd Am Amlnvestor AmMutual Fd AmNnt Growth Anchor Group: Growth Fund Income Reserve Spectrum Fundm Invest Washing Not Audax Fund Axe Houahton: Fund A Fund Stock Fund 4 Science Coro BLC GrowthFd BabsonDav Bovrock Fund Bavrock Grwth BeaconHillMt Beacon Inv Berkshire Grth Bondstock Co BostFound Fd BrwnFd Hawaii BurnhamFd Calvin Bullock: Bullock Fund Canadian Fnd Dividend Shrs Nation WideS NY Venture CG Fund Century Shr Tr Challenger Inv Channing Funds: 4.55 6 53 6 45 3 91 6 34 10 50 6.10 4 15 6 54 By WILLI KINGLi: Gannett News Service WASHINGTON There's no "rabbit that someone is going to pull' out of a hat" to rescue Trans World Airlines from "the greatest crisis we've been hit with," says TWA's operating chief.

A temporary government subsidy on the "order of magnitude of $100 million to $200 million" is the main hope, Charles C. Tillinghast TWA's board chairman and chief executive officer, said. After he outlined increases in fuel costs five times TWA's profit for last year, hopes for pooling some operations or swapping routes with arch-rival Pan American, and uncertainty about whether Congress would support a subsidy, one reporter said his predictions were of almost unrelieved gloom. "You journalistic types always expect some innovative rabbit that someone is going to pull out of a hat," said Tillinghast. Institute President Frank N. Ikard said domestic refinery capacity fell short of demand by 3.6 million barrels a day last year. The survey showed the industry plans to expand refinery capacity by 1.9 million barrels over the next four years. "All of us industry, government and individual citizensmust do everything we can to reduce the rate at which we consume energy, through eliminating waste and increasing our efficiency," Ikard said. "If we do not, the refining gap will continue to widen in spite of everything the oil companies do to expand refinery capacity Ikard said the planned expansion figures compare to a 3.8 million-barrel expansion during the previous 10 years.

Daily demand grew by 6.5 million barrels in the same period. "The oil companies made these achievements in spite of profitability that was lower than the average for all manufacturing, uncertainty over sources of supply, changing government regulations affecting automotive fuel requirements, and environmentalist opposition to refinery construction in some areas," he said. But while Ikard stressed the high cost of building new refineries out of industry profits, Sen. Henry M. Jackson urged Democrats to make an election issue out of President Nixon's veto of an energy bill which would have rolled back petroleum prices.
