'Perfect' explores L.A. health clubs By BOB THOMAS Associated Press Writer "Perfect" explores the sweaty world of Los Angeles health clubs and the rarified reaches of trendy journalism. The script displays more flab than muscle, but the film is peopled with such attractive faces and bodies that it is bound to be a crowd pleaser. Based on Rolling Stone articles by Aaron Latham and written by Latham and director James Bridges, "Perfect" casts John Travolta as a hotshot Rolling Stone reporter who wangles an interview with an industrialist accused of cocaine dealing His next assignment is to investigate the body-building industry in California.

Travolta becomes entranced with Jamie Lee Curtis, a superstar among aerobics teachers. An Olympic-class swimmer who has been stung by a scandalous article, she is suspicious of Travolta's motives, and with good reason. He is depicted as one of those reporters who would betray his mother for a good story. Love redeems him, but only after he has ruined a few reputations, Bridges, who also directed "Urban Cowboy," has an intelligent eye for what's new, and he meticulously depicts the health club scene. "Perfect" at times resembles a Jane Fonda exercise tape, so extended are the aerobics.

Another "daytime first" will be a serial based on an unusual novel, titled "Single." The series will explore the lives of a "family of the '80s," four women bound by the ties of friendship and set in Southern California. It is being developed into serial form by Claire Labine, creator of ABC's "Ryan's Hope." Harriet Frank, co-writer of the screenplay for "Norma Rae," is the author of the book. The "ABC Bestseller Playhouse," another series in development, will feature stories based on 12 bestselling books in a monthly miniseries format, Ms. Smith said. ABC has options on several books for the "Playhouse" series, including Father Andrew Greeley's Cardinal Sin, Norma Klein's Girls Turn Wives, The Fire Island Quartet by Burt Hershfield, Texas Rich, by Fern Michaels, and the Robin Cook thriller, Godplayer.

"These books and authors bring built- in audience approval," Ms. Smith said. "With romantic stories revolving around women in jeopardy and in exotic locations from Rome to Monte Carlo, 'Bestseller Playhouse' brings a whole new look to daytime."
