Lasisii'g State Journal Sunday, October 30,1994 3C MSU HOCKEY Spartan lead melts into tie vr' Mi 1 X- period and things looked promising for another victory. Watt gave MSU a 1-0 lead at 16:13, firing in a rebound from 15 feet out after Sean Berenns blast was stopped by Lord. Fifty-nine seconds later, Murray gobbled up a rebound in the slot and found the top right corner to make it 2-0. MSU had all sorts of good scoring chances in the second period but Lord made several great saves and had the puck bouncing his way. The Flames cut MSU's lead to 2-1 midway through the second period, seconds after Steve Guolla had a glorious opportunity to give the Spartans a 3-0edge.

Steve Guolla missed a wide-open ona backhander firm close in. The Flamescame right down the ice and Rob Hutson converted in front to make it a one-goal game. Lord made a big save on Anson Carter on a wrap-around bid and stopped Chris Slater in front on a two-on-one breakin with Carter. Michigan 6, Ferris 1 At Big Rapids, Bill Muckalt scored three goals, two of them on the power play, as Michigan rebounded to split a two-game series with Ferris State. The Wolverines (3-2 overall, 1-1 CCHA) scored three power-play goals on eight chances while holding the Bulldogs scoreless on eight power plays.

Muckalt's first goal gave the Wolverines a 2-1 lead. The Wolverines scored three unanswered goals in the second period and capped the scoring with Muckalt's goal with 12:29 left in the game. Rob Gordon, Harold Schock and John Arnold also scored for Michigan. Marty Turco made 21 saves. Phil Sturock scored the lone goal for the Bulldogs (2-2, 1-1) 7:20 into the first period.

Rich Nagy made 13 saves in two periods for Ferris State, Seth Appert made 1 1 saves in the third period. Bowling Green 5, WMU 3 At Kalamazoo, Brett Punchard and Curtis Fry scored two goals each and Bowling Green scored three-power play goals as the Falcons defeated Western Michigan. Punchard scored the Falcons first two goals and Fry scored a pair of power-play goals at the end of the first period as Bowling Green (5-1 overall, 3-0 CCHA) opened a 4-1 lead. Dale Crombeen added a power-play goal midway through the second period. Bob Petrie made 21 saves and Brian Holzinger had three assists.

Derek Innanen, Justin Cardwell and Jamal Mayers scored for Western. Brian Renfrew made 21 saves. Illinois-Chicago fights to 2-2 overtime finish By Neil Koepke Lansing State Journal CHICAGO Coach Ron Mason saw it coming, but there was nothing he could do about it. Michigan State came up flat and uninspired Saturday and saw its season-beginning winning streak end at four games. The Spartans wasted tons of good scoring chances early and then held on at the end to escape with a 2-2 tie with Illinois-Chicago in a Central Collegiate Hockey Association game.

In front of a lively crowd of 3,751 fans at the Pavilion, the Flames rallied from a 2-0 first-period deficit and scored single goals in the second and third periods. "We just didn't have enough respect for our opponent You can't play without emotion like we did," Mason said. "When you don't play with emotion, you don't finish, you don't do the extra on faceof fs or to get loose pucks. "I could see this coming when I first saw our schedule. Then we beat them twice last week and played a tough game at Western (Friday).

We came in here and didn't think we had to work hard to win this game." After outshooting UIC 23-16 in the second period, MSU avoided defeat because of sharp goaltend-ing by Mike Buzak in the third period and in overtime. The Flames held a 6-0 edge in shots in the five-minute overtime. Buzak finished with 40 saves. Although the Spartans didn't show good jump early, they capitalized on two power plays to take a 2-0 lead. Mike Watt and Rem Murray scored in the first period.

UIC got goals from Rob Hutson in the second and Shaun Summer-ville in thethe third The Flames found a solid goal-tender Saturday as freshman Adam Lord, maming his firs start, turned back 44 shots. MSU (3-0-1, 4-0-1) returns home next weekend to face Lake Superior at 7 p.m. on Friday and Ohio State at 7 p.m. on Saturday. "I thought we competed well at Western (in a 3-2 win) on Friday.

It wasa tough situation. But we didn't respond well here tonight," Mason said. "If we're going to be there at the end, we have to respond better against teams like this. If we're on our game, chances are we're going to win." The Spartans weren't Saturday. And they didn't win.

Big Eight Conference race. Nebraska: Colorado shut down Buffaloes ran out of magic in Lincoln, where they were humiliated 52-7 in 1992.

"I never felt like we got in sync and I think you have to credit Nebraska for that," McCartney said. Berringer completed 12 of 17 passes for 142 yards and smoothly guided Nebraska's option attack, which had lost its punch after Fra-zier was lost for the season with a blood clot in his leg after the Husk-ers' fourth game. "We threw the ball a little more with Brook," Osborne said. "He did a great job." But the star of the day was Nebraska's defense, which limited Colorado to 314 yards in total of Continued FROM 1C down tries and 0-for-4 on fourth down. "We were coming at them from all angles," said Nebraska defensive tackle Christian Peter.

"We put great pressure on them all day." Nebraska won its 22nd straight game at Memorial Stadium, which was sold out for a record 200th consecutive time dating back to 1962. The win also snapped the Cornhuskers' 12-game losing streak against top 5 teams since 1987. Colorado beat Michigan on a Hail Mary pass last month, but the PREP ROUNDUP Holt girls win first regional title noon. He was 12-of-28 for 150 yards, ran 14 times for 24 yards and was sacked three times. The loss stopped Colorado's 11-game winning streak and probably ended the Buffaloes' bid for the national championship.

Nebraska plays unranked Kansas, Iowa State and Oklahoma in its last three games, which means the Cornhuskers have a good chance to go undefeated in the regular season for the second straight year. Nebraska dominated the first half, outgaining Colorado 234-89 and holding the Buffaloes scoreless for the first time in their last 28 games. Defense nonexistent as White beats Green 105-81 in basketball By Ohm Youngmisuk Lansing State Journal EAST LANSING Fast breaks, dunks and three-point shooting were the highlight of Saturday's Michigan State basketball Green and White game. Oh, let's also not forget about a senior shooting guard named Shawn Respert. The consensus preseason All-America guard scorched his teammates for 31 points to lead the White team over the Green team, 105-81 before about 3,700 fans at the Breslin Center. The Spartans play their first game Nov. 17 against the Polish National team.

Junior centerforward Jamie Feick had 19 points, 13 rebounds and a couple of crowd-pleasing dunks for the White team. Junior forward Quinton Brooks, who switched from White to Green at the half with junior forward Dai-mon Beathea, finished with 18 points for the Green. Jud Heathcote, the MSU head coach, said there was a lot of offense and not enough defense. "There were some spectacular plays but also some carelessness and sloppy play," Heathcote said. "I saw some bright spots but if there was one negative, it would have been our defensive effort maybe on both teams." The White team, which consisted of the projected starting lineup, dominated the Green team in the first half.

The White squad jumped out to a 29-11 lead behind an 18-2 run. The Green squad, mostly made up of reserves, struggled to a 50-28 deficit at the half. "What we were trying to do is maybe build from day one some of the new players working with the experienced players," Heathcote said. "When you look at Jamie Feick and Jon Garavaglia, who averaged 3 and 2.6 points a game last wn fom to ft evprv opportunity they can to play with the two starting guards." The starting lineup for the White was Respert, senior point guard Eric Snow, Brooks, sophomore forward Garavaglia and Feick. The Green opened with junior point guard David Hart, junior guard Steve Nicodemus, senior guard Mark Prylow, Beathea and sophomore forward Steve Polonowski.

The Green squad seemed overwhelmed in the first half but they mustered a second half comeback to cut the lead to under double-digits. Respert took over from there hitting four 3-pointers down the stretch to help the White team pull away. He finished 13-of-21 from the field including five 3-pointers. "Our transition defense was poor," said MSU assistant Stan Jop-lin, the Green team coach. "They got a lot of easy baskets.

We got the lead down and after that Shawn must have hit about four or five jumpers. The second team played decent but obviously we have some work to do. They need to be a lot more patient on offense." Respert awed more than Joplin. "I think Respert is very impressive," said Jim Sanderson, an MSU fan from Leslie. "He's the star of the team." Polonowski, who had 16 points and seven rebounds, said the crowd might have affected the Green.

"If you noticed the first team was a lot more veterans and the second team was a few veterans with a couple of rookies," Polonowski said. "Some of the guys were a little tight in the first half. Once they noticed that it isn't any different than open gym, they started playing a little better. Something like this, it's very little defense and a lot of offense." "I wanted to try and get into the flow," said Ray Weathers, a sophomore guard making his Spartan debut on the Green team after sitting out last year. "I was kind of shaky," said freshman guard Thomas Kelley, another player making his debut "I really didn't know what to expect I came out there and felt a little numb.

It took me a little while to ppf in the flow." PREP BASKETBALL St. Johns, 63-56 gets by with 17 points. Sarah Sinke added 15 points and Becky Murray had 12 points and 11 rebounds for the Redwings (15-2). ST. JOHNS (56) Murray 52-412, Rehmann 6 3-417, Koenigsknecht 20-04, Sinke 61-315.
