The Red Wings break camp today with Brad Smith sitting atop the individual scoring standings in the intrasquad games. Smith had two goals and seven assists. Loiselle had three goals and five assists. Tiger Williams, beginning his first season with the Wings, had five goals and two assists.

Jody Gage had two goals and four assists. What do statistics mean in training camp? Only Williams is likely to be a regular for Detroit this season. Burr, incidently, had two goals and two assists in the training camp games. That was an improvement from his junior train-' ing camp last year at Kitchener, Ontario. He did not score at all in pre-season, but he ended up as the league's rookie of the year.

The Red Wings will play Wednesday night in Chicago. The team will resume camp Thursday in Lincoln Park. Steve Yzerman will join the team there. has six veterans from last year's team Brad Park, Randy Ladou-ceur, Reed Larson, Greg Smith, John Barrett and Colin Campbell. Polano did not import the 31-year-old Chalupa to play at Adirondack, and he wants Larry Trader to make the roster because he handles the puck with flair.

Ladouceur could be shuffled to Adirondack before the season begins. Devellano enters the season with realistic expectations. "There has been progess," he said. "We were 20th when I took over the program and then we went to 18th and then we went to 15th in two years. If we could move up two more spots to 13th this season, I would definitely be happy." Devellano thinks the team should be competitive in the Campbell Conference.

Last season, Detroit finished just two points out of second place. "On paper Minnesota and Chicago have better teams," Devellano said. "But fortunately hockey is played on ice, not Continued from Page 1B careers are over, were assigned to Adirondack. Veterans Andre St. Laurent and Barry Melrose were among those also sent to Adirondack.

The Wings still have 28 players on the roster. Wingers Pierre Aubry, Joe Paterson and Brad Smith and centers Claude Loiselle and Gerry Minor are probably the fringe players of the group. Their futures with the parent team are very much up in the air. The fortunes of Loiselle and Minor might be tied to the fate of Burr. If he makes the team, as expected, there is not much room for them.

Coach Nick Polano said he will keep all three of his veteran goal-tenders Greg Stefan, Ed Mio and Corrado Micalef for a couple of weeks into the season before deciding which two he will keep. More than likely, Micalef would be the odd-man-out. Stefan has been designated as the No. 1 goaltender, and Mio is the veteran of the trio. Polano said he will carry seven defenseman into the season.

He said he thanks his high school coaches Heering and Chuck Dixon for helping him discover his own desire.

Testimony to his greatnesss as a collegiate wrestler was his ability to switch from the 177-pound weight class to 191 to heavyweight without losing his edge. He won the heavyweight title when he Streeter, Lloyd McKenna and Jan Kwikowski were the best wrestlers on the team. The six went through a 13-dual meet schedule with only three losses between them in 78 matches. "There was so much talent on the team that it allowed me to get better in a hurry," Barden said. He lost only two matches in his last two years, and in his senior season he finished third in the state championships.

The University of Michigan offered him a full scholarship, much to his suprise and delight. "After I placed third, I figured there was a lot of guys with a lot more talent than I had," Barden said. "I really learned that my freshman year. I took a beating. I Barden Continued from Page 1B Sports.

"Everything he did he did with very limited natural ability," Le-wandowski said. "No one else did it for Jack. He did it all by himself. The thing that I marveled at about him was that he was a lazy person. But when he decided he wanted to do something, he did it." Barden's drive for excellence continued after his wrestling career ended.

He now is an osteopath, practicing in Belleville. Barden says he cannot argue with those who say he never really had any natural athletic talent. "I was definitely not very coordinated," Barden says. "I Just put in more hours at practice than anyone else." Barden traces his success back to his high school days, even though his prep career had an inauspicious beginning. In his first match, he was pinned by a Pontiac Central wrestler in 26 seconds.

During his senior year in 1959, Port Huron had a strong team. Barden and five friends Dave Chestor, John Zauner, Larry weighed only 185 pounds.
